stances. It appears that the child, only three year old, attracted by some boys throwing stones into a well for the pleasure of hearing the splash at the bottom, was leaning over the well to watch what was going on, fell in, and the nurse, no doubt to the hope of saving its life, jumped in after it, but both were drowned,
The Tarter soldiers in the city are entitled to receive with their pay a cestale quantity of rice. Intended, of course, for their consumption, and it appears that some of them, to meet expenses of extravagant habits, bave been found to be selling it at a low price to the people. This having come to the knowledge of the Grain Com. missioner, that official has tsened a proclama. tion strongly condemning the practice, and threatening the severest punishment to anyone detected disposing of their provisions in this way,
It was only last week that we reported a robbery at an ina on the road between Hisg- wha and Foochow, and now the account of another robbery in the same locality, evidently also planned, reaches us. Five natives were
entrusted with the carrying of $1.500 from Hing wha to Focchow, and early on Sunday morning last went into an lau for rest and light refresh ments. It is pretty evident from their account, that the cakes or tea they partook of must have been drugged, for they all fell into a deep sleep after a very short time, and while in this state the thieves transferred the dollars to other baskets of their own, and putting a layer of lychees on the top, marched off with them. The thlaves have not yet been discovered.
