The Avenir du Tonkinways:—We are pleased to lean that, in spite of all the alarming rumours which have been in circulation recently in regard to the Hongay coal miner, the Société des Char bonnages is in the most promising position possible.
This (past) month, for the first time, the Com- pany has fully paid ite way, with a slight balance on the sight side...

The output of coal at present (29th April) is never less (and, we are informed, usually a good deal mere) than 540 tons a day-300 from Haton and 240 from Negotea.
At Canton and Hongkong there is a flourishing demand not only for the coal as it is mined but
and in Hongkong, totalling about 40.000 tons. also for the stocks now lying on hand in Hongay New business is being arranged in Swatow alsa, The steamship Cape Colonna is carrying 4,000 tons each voyage to Hangkang, and the Krim 2,500 to Canton. A third steamer will have to be chartered to supply the Swatow market,
Thus it will be seen that, after some difficulty, our British neighbours are developing a profit able business for our colony of Tonkin, and at the same time for themselves,
