HUNTING CHINESE PIRATES.
Under the above heading, Charles B. Lewis contributes the following interesting (but la rome respects not altogether accurate) yarn to a Van
couver contemporary →→
A great deal has been said and written about the pirates of Malaya and Borneo, but for down. right cold blooded devilry the Chinese beat everybody ever in the business, The Malays used to spare l'e, but the Chinamen always made a clean seep. I speak in the past tense berause Chinese were are now clear of sex rovers, though it was less than ten years ago that twenty-eight f them were beheaded in suce cession on fire morning at the execution grounds in Harguong. Something wrong here. Ed. H.K. Telegraph.] Up to the rear 667 piracy was looked upon almost as a regular badness along the China coast and up and down Its principal rivers, Like the brigands of Sicily, they stood in with the authorities and were protected instead of belag hunted down. As in Russia, so it is in China-nothing can be done without bilbing officials, and if the bribe is large enough anything can be a complished!' -
The Queen had dropped down to Foochow, when five of us," ali American sailors from the Hatli Milward, of Boston, deserted ship to go on her. We signed at "thirty dollars a month and were to have extra for all captures. It wa screw made up of English, French, Germanis, Americans, Spatlah, Kallans and Luscars. About thirty of the men were deserters from men-of-war. We ran into the month of the Chang-Te river for a couple of weeks practice with the guns and to get things ship-shape with the row and then started out on a cruise.
On the east side of the great Island of For mosa are half a dozen smaller falands. On one of these a pirate named Wang Hon bad his herdquarters. He had elx junks and, about 8on men. Had Wang-Ho been seen by any Ameri- can chicus agent or dime moteur manager previous to turning pirate he would probably have been brought to the United States for exhibition and lived out his days on the fat of the land at fifty dollars per week. - Ha wa 1 veritable gisat, standing about seven feet high and weighing 300 pounds. He had bea pirate for five or six years when the Quran started out on her culse Pltacy had become so legitimate a business with him that he sailed into the port of Foochow regularly every three months and paid over to the authorities a "whack" of his plunder. Everybody knew why he was there, but he was never molested. On one occasion he went aboard of a New York tea ship, looked her all over and then said to the captain, through an interpreter:
"You have a fine craft bere, but when 1 capture her only the cargo will be of any use to me. I shall take that out and sink your ship!" Our instructions from the Government were very broad and liberal. Any Chinese craft which did not "bands up" at command was to be considered a pirate and treated accordingly. It was desired to capture as many pirates alle as possible, so as to produce a proper moral effect when they were beheaded before a crowd on land, but we were not to go to any unnecessary trouble about it. Wang-Hoa's Janks seldom cruised farther south then Cambodia, or farther: north than the Straits of Corea, and we knew pretty well where to look for them. Of course ibe nows had gone abroad of our fitting out, and there was no doubt that friends had carried the pirate fall particulars. Therefore on reaching ite upith coast of Formoss ve ran into a bay and changed the color of the palat on the bark, replaced her new'sails with old and made such other changes as to completely disguise her. Here also a falsa stem of tron was bolted on, and the Queen was prepared to sail right intò and over any junk in Wang-Hoa's Rect.
On leaving the bay we cruised to the north almost to the coast of Jaan, and it was upon our return and about twenty miles to the east of the Island of Sanbok that we fell in with a couple of jarks which were set down as suspicious characters. Trey were coming up from the south, and our first move was to make things left lack as if we weres merchantman, and short handed at that. Most of the men were sent below, the sigering was purposely wild, and as the junks, drew, near enough to make us out
way. He ordered the bark to run alongside and give her a brondside, saying hat be did not want to bother with any more live pirates. The junk had come up into the wird to walt for us. She must have also had a full hundred men aboard, and a more villainous let of fellows were never gathered together.

The dead body of Wang-Hoa was found on one of the junks, and his head was cut off and sent to Peking. We carried
sixty-five pilsoners into Foocbow. We got into port on a Tuesday morning, and on Friday afternoon every man of them was beheaded., I don't know what sort of a trial they had, but none of us were called as witnesses. The declaration of the Government official was pro bably considered all that was necessary. That was the beginning of the end. While pleacy is practised in Chinese waters even to this day, it is no longer a business or profession, and all attacks are confined to trading junks of their own nationality.

The fellows had determined not to give us the slightest show, but apened on the bak at once with their brass poun ers and legals and shouted to us to haul down our flag. That werg closing in when our crew jumped to guar eri and opened fire. Our guns were loaded whil solid shot, and we only fired couple of broadsides. Neither junk was over pistol 'shq; away, coming up to lay us aboard, and the balls nearly tore them to places, In four minutes from the discharge both were out of sight under water, and there must have been fifty men floating about on the wreckage. We lowered two boats to pick them up, but only got thirty. The oibers deliberately drowned them- selves rather than be rescued and turned over
to the executioner.
From some of those brought aboard it was learned that the fanks were commanded by Tall Yon and Tung-Chwan, two captains under Wan-Hoa's orders. Each crew numbered sixty- five men, and so the Government official aboard credited the bark with $1,300 for pirates killed and captured, and with twenty dollars per ton for the tonnage seat to the bottom of the sex). None of the prisoners would at first ‹give any Information about the rest of the fleet or in regard to Wang-Hoa's hiding place, but the Goverment official knew how to deal with them. He selected his victim and administered: the bastinado until the fellow was willing to tell all ho knew. Two other junks were then cruising, he said, to the south of Tate-Nan island, about 300 miles to the southwest of our position, and The remaining two of the fleet had Rono South to the Guifal Tongala. We laid our course to overhaul the first two, and on the fourth day after our fight we sighted them.
