A BICFCLE CRANK.

M Lenz, the bleycle crank who has for months part been careering through space in China in search of the bubble notoriety, writes to our Shanghai morning contemporary under date January 29th :-

but not without a hard pull of it. When the 1 ferched here safe and sound on the 26th, first mow fell two weeks ago, I bired coolies to carry the bicycle, and for twelve daya walked through cold, ice, snow and mud 165 miles Near Shiaya fan, the coolies crossed the river and travelled north which compelled me to come round about to bere, instead of staying on the south side of the river.

Mr. Hart Buck rode Viper a mile and a half In 371, 1-14, 1.514, 2281, 3.05), and 3.39, and the crack jumper is quite likely to again sejura the bonors of a place in the Foochow Cup Blooming Heather was sent along for a milk in 37. 1.143.1.54, 2.31. going in much better firm than might reasonably have been expected from a peny that only a fortnight ago was regarded as a hopeless "screw"; but all the same be I not a Ayer at least, not yet. Assyrian, Mr.

Dr. Meidon fent compelled me to ride through the crable Parmesan along for half a mile in 351, and 673fe for a bicycle, but from there west only fit streels. To Tatung the roads were fairly pass bat the racing-like éream will have to greatly

The Amoy-owned Primrose was sent a quarter of a mile in a shade over 30 seconds, unel this pony gallops in such easy style that he must not be lost sight of in the short distance races.

I notice that the question of whether or not a return to the status in quo as regarde #awi:eps and the totalisator at the forthcoming race meet ing has been raised, bath editorially and by an alleged correspondeat, in the columns of the Dally Press. It is a great pity that fools who dont know what they are wilting about will rush- in and, by offensive displays of blatant ignorance,, cramp the sensible efforts of practical men who are interested in the success of racing bi the colony and who are doing their best to ensure that success. I have neither time nor space sit my disposat to-day, but I hope to find an opportunity to-morrow to place this matter in its true light before my reiders; and meanwhile content my self whb remarking that if a gentleman's promise is to be relied on, the good old times under pre- vious Governors of Hongkong, so far as con- cerns the freedom from police interference in a harmless custom recognised in nearly all Fritish colonies, will be to "evidence on the 23rd inst and following days..

Tientsin, January gih. The winter is dingging along as usual, and we shall soon be looking forward to the opening of the Pelho, that is to say in a couple of months or 10. The opening of the Manchurian railway may take a few years yet before it comes off, although some respectable progress has been mado already in the direction of Shan-bai-kwan, the eastern terminus of the Great Wall, and those concerned in this grand undertaking are ready to push it on with might and malo. Eray thinking person is in strong hopes that the wiser and better class of natives will Dimately carry the day, and see this grand national enterprise and important work carried to a successful end at no distant date.

Amusement and recreation have not been wasting this sesson, and our visitors of the "cious fleet." as we call the foreign gunbeats brand, iffs and Zion, have joyfully contr! bated a cheerful quota to our fun.
