Do the whole I consider Moji one of the best and cheapest harbours in Japan.
Several representations have lately been made to the Japanese Government to have Moji added to the list of Treaty ports in the faterests of Tapanese merchants trading there and for the convenience of European shipping which daily visit the port; and there is no doubt that such a concession would be bailed with great of a 60 mile railway which taps the i.h satisfaction. From fis position at the terminus shePrice, wheat, to sit ad coal producing distic. in the land of Kluski it can easily be seen that if facilities were given to foreign trade considerable quantity of produce, the cost of transport of which to Nagasaki and Kobe at present is a great tax, would find its way direct to a foreign market, Independent of the trouble la obtaining a permit from Tokio to ship any non-treaty port there is the absence of Furopean *pecified article in a particular vessel from a

Several steamers have at times loaded cargoes of slee for Europe or America from Moji bat unless a free cargo can be secured vessels will pet undertake to call there for a small quantity under the present conditions. On the other hand if Mofi were thrown open, all steamers, entering and leaving the Inland sta would call in on the chance of what they could pick up in the shape of cargo and passengers, at the same time fitting their bunkers with cheap.cool. It may not be out of place to give a brief description here of the town itself. It is formed of a single principal street, along the shore of the bay, about a mile long at the foot of some low steep hills covered with trees, the castera end extending to Mojisaki, a hill about 6co feet high forming a promentory at the north end of Kinshiu. Between Majisaki and Simonas ki the Strait is very nur:ow and the tide runs with
great velochy. There is a fit plece of land behind and at the base of Mojisaki, which is used for making salt from sea water by evaporation; and several salt pans were during my visit busy aL work cleaning the raw material. The principal buildings in the town are the railway station and warehouses attached for the storage of cargo. There are not many dwelling houses at present bat' considerable number are in the course of erection. Good sites are to be had for European offices and godowns along the shore, and picture eique spots for bungalows on the bill sides. About the centre of the tows is the Hatoba or ∙landing place for sampans and cargo boats and from this a good sea wall runs westward for a mile, protecting the foreshore which has just been reclaimed from the sea by a company formed for that purpose. This reclaimed land is 300 to 500 feet deep and most of it has been sold at the fate of 40 cents per square foot to owners cargo. There are not less then about 100,000 and agents of coal mines for the storage of their tons of coal piled op in different heaps along this forcahore walilog sale. Intending pur
