condition of each and every one. Those who were not in actual need and yet bad put their names down are now being "squeezed unmercifully by the officials. One man, for löstance," near the South Gare of the city was enrolled. On enquiry, be was found to be quite a little Cimsus among his neighbours, having several shops indifferent villages His neighbours were so incensed at his cupidity that they came to bis house and broke up all bis furniture for him. The magistrate then took him in band and got $too out of him, and another $100 is demanded, I hear, before they will let him eff. The families that have been enrolled have the character ch'a, written in red on the aids of their door.

Fortune seems to have favoured the malcon- tents by pacing in their hands an Instroment wherewith to work their designs. A ceniale foreigner recer t'y contracted with a Chiusman to | build him four tenement houset, and then departed the place. The Celestial has fulfilled the contract, but, unfortunately one of his works I men, at the last moment parily despoiled a grave in search of earth for the finishing teuch to the houses. The grave is elt, the earth removed was not much, but, was fut sufficient handle for a wily rld woman who had watched the uprising of the lenements with great solicitude and enmlly of soul. That grave contained the bones of her ancestors no matter how re- mote, and, had now been descċrated and its an- clent soil used in the construction of a foreigner's house. Such an oppre unity was not to be lost, so arming herself with a gong she paraded the streets, banged. it, ad announced to ali ber Countrymen who wou'd listen the outrage that had been perpetrand by foreign agente.

The Bettish or su porested to the authorities analost this stirring up of animosity, and the affelt was 5 vestigated and found to be con- siderably ex ggerated; an the old lady was warned as to her fu me hehayirut. This was about a fortnight nga Since then she appears to have stayed at home until the sốth, when a rene ition of gong and valor assembled a crowd oursine the housing and they nmured themarives by the wing sieves at the buildings, one being now inhabited · hy the, Consul's ennstable. So diers were set for nd the mob disp vrred.'" Note: soldiers were normally obtainable. The Consul's representation were also sufficiently strong to get the city placarded the following day, with roll es to the effect that as the foreigners were here by treaty sight, any one Interfering with them would be arrested and "punished. A very strong measure indeed ibis,

for Chinese officials,

Accordingly, the nxt day the law shiding citizens within the walls to show they believed these dreuments opéersphal, or how much they respreitd Buch-preclamations if they were genuine, replied by mobbing Mr. Cockbum, the head of the Presbyterian Mission here, whose duty call him to the city each day. First they staited with sợ ff and fer, but increasing in number they fallowed him nut of the city gate and pelted bim with mud and stones, through the stee's into his own compound, and continued their brutal conduci right up through the grounds to the very door of his house, within twenty yards of Consulate. This was on Sunday, the 17th.

The following day the old weman appeared with her gong again and paraded the streets with berald story, happily without any further mis- chief. It is genitally believed now that the old dame is being run by a city syndicate wha hope to get an extorifenatz price for the land, which she now offers to sell, and then "squeeze "her for the lion share of the spill.

If they were left alone, they would have a hand-rail all along over the bar to find their way in, which would be the finest thing in the world for some of them; but unfa tunately for them this is impracticable, and the old bot safe plan-that the Taku Pilots will have to go out and find out the little shif-« | and changes on the bar for themselves—#11 | have to be stuck to for some time to come yet There la nothing like, personal knowledge after all, hot, like everything else in this world, it his to be paid for, on the Pelho as well as on the grander Whangpon; it is just a question of live and let live, and all concerned would fare better in abiding by li.

A grod ice- breaker could certainly undertake in these days of steam and telegraphs to keep the, Tongku railway station in the Peího open for steamer communication with the ours'de worlid, or what is of much the same consequence and nearly thr same thing, keep Peking and Shanghid In constant cont-ct, an advantage not to be unrezed at although we must admit th49 th - Customs Mail Service, per couriers, is a most pri's worthy. enterprue. The banks of the river have looked Father bosy of late with the Junk-men docking their craft in mud docks, made ad hoc for the winter, including the gallant crews of the packets of the Taku Tug and Lighter Co., with one or two exceptions, which are still kept afloat, in cluding the steamer Kaltat. Even the old Taku Ughtweasel has been removed into the Pelho she is to have a new mast and bowsprit, put in during the winter, for next season, The Iron buoys on the bar, of course, have been replaced by spars, for the ice to play with during the approaching cold time. The weather has been ane of late, but game has not been quite no plentiful yet, a might have been expected.

Before the present works were established in Port Ar-bur, leading the line drinking water from the moud- ains to the port, the soldiers, the coolies, and other natives were dying off like maggots by winter, while now, with its fine water from the cholera in summer and typheit fever during the mountains, Port Arthur has become one of the hestiblest places of the northern gulfs.

Purflends of the Pe ya tg Squidron bave mostly left us again, but I fear they will find it rather colder where they went than where they left. I learned on trustworthy authority, that it has been freezing pretty hard occasionally in Tallenwan, Lush, unkas, and Wei-hai-wels. The Aschwang lightship and her tender the Daphne have been moored snugly in our pon for the winter, like a hen and her chicken. Our bashour is getting less lively now, with our summer visitors gone and the Tientsin season victually stan end." We were let here to hope that in future the Tientsin trade would be carried on all the year round, and of the idea that an ice-breaker for the Pelto was very favourably entertalued at Tientsin and Peklog and I dare say sise at Tongku, Kalping, Taku, and Shanghai Here, of course, we would be delighted to see an ice-breaker at work on the Taku bar, on the supposition that the Pelho steamers during the winter would be calling here, either coming or going to the Pelho, or both ways. For the whole province of Chibli, the capital of course included, the mouth of the Pelko open all the whole winter season would be of incalculable benefit.
