THE VO: UNTEERS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HOWorona TazkoraPH." DEAR SIR-It is only the interest I. take in volunteering that leads me to trouble you with a reply to the letter of "A Valunteer of 1864"
This gentleman seems to be very angry, but I do not understand why. Surely be does not object to being called a "man; or to members of the Hongkong Club belar called "members" If he had taken a little thought before getting exclled, it might have occurred to him that a volantger organization anywhere must follow the social life of the place it is in; it cannot reform the system of social caste, nor is it one of the 1725 objects of volunteering so to do.
If this "64 Battalion drilling gether he perhaps might
volunteer bas belonged to have noticed that the companies sort themselves out, and recruits naturally jolu the company where they find their associates and friends.
Perhaps it will let a Httle light into his mind through the clouds ofhis excited Imagination if say that, as's man from a retail store, I should prefer to join' rifle company where I should fiad men of my own sort.

The Hunghom Dock coolies have for some time been receiving double rates of pay for night work ; one full night counting as two days. Previously they were paid for each night at the rate of one day and a half, as in Shanghal, Singapore, British And most Continental ports. To the Dock Company it is of no consequence how much the men are paid for overtime, since the pay goes practically from the shipowners direct to the men and the only way la which the Company is affected la that night work necessarily makes the men less fit for their regular work. However, the shipowners object to paying double rates in Hongkong, when at other parts they only pay our-and-a-half. Consequently the Hongtong and Whampoa Dock Company wished to rivert to the old ate. There is no di pate about Sunday work, as erroneously stated; it is paid at the double rate. Neither is there any dispute at the Aberdeen or Cosmopolitan Decks, were steadily there, and arrangements sta being made no alteration is proposed. Work is going on for the contracts now in band at Hunghom to be transferred, so that practically no delay may be anticipated.
