There is some reason to believe that Si eng Total's action In this matter is partly designed to coerce Mesurs, Butterfield and Swire lato a rest-blishment of the combination between the three companies. There is a wharf at Canton of which to late firm of Russell and Co, had a Eind of perpetual lease. When that firm failed, Mess. Butterfield and Swite wished to take over the lease. The Chinese professed them selves unable to grant a lease for more than five years and Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, It is said, with the object of bringing the Chinese to their terms, withdrew from the recently. renewed combination and re-lostituted active opposition to the China Merchants' Company. The huckno business is said to be Shông Trotal's ROBWCE. Ith a corfession that the China Merchants Co. cannot compete on even terms with the two English companies, but it is as enterly leg tim temode of enabling the Chinese Co. to comstie with its rivals. We treat that the British Government will soon make the Tsung Yaman take that view, and impress on Steg Taolai that he cannot be allowed to assume the right to ignore the existing treaties with foreign Powers, when he thinks that he will get 22 advantage to bimself or one of his companies by -doing so.-N. Early in this year a neighbouring house was purchased, but as the riot at Ken Ning Fu occurred soon after it was judged better not to repair it ill this affair was detded.
In August a settlement was made, and after wards Mr. Phillips.commenced repairing the house; no disturbance seemed imminent unl! the altereilans were roofed in, and a few days before the first outbreak hp wint d. wn to Nang Wa to bring up his wife to Kien Yang.

Mr. Phillips and his wife arrived the following day and although the ames of the perpirstors were all given in to the yaman no steps seem to have bren taken to warn of punish them.
