After a time the services of the foreign employers were dispensed with and charge was taken of the mines by specially appointed mandarina, under the direction, if we mistake not, of Mr. Tong King Sing, once managing director of the Chins Merchants S. East will take advantage of the opportunity to go round the world by the C. P. R. route. Pro- bably at least half of the European and well-to- do nativo population of India will visit the Ola Country and Chicago during the year, timing their journey so as to avoid the Sury Canal in the middle of summer; and the C. P. R. arranga ments with the P. & O. Company will allow passengers from any point on the route to ga the whole trip in either direction. Tickets ($510) will be lasued after the 1st of March, 1893.

Ar's proof of the theory that "a new line makes irade," Mr. Brawn stated that at least 20 per cent of the total psicoger business on the C. P. R. consisted of visitors from the United States to the Far East, who previously had never gured in the list at all, so that this branch of traffic had been created out of nothing, so to speak, by the C. P. R.

Up to the present, the result of Mr. Brown's visit has been that he has gained a number of wrinkles as to the minor details of departe.ental work in the Company's business. He is immen sely pleased with the success of the new stea mers so far, and with the prospects of fature business in the East general, and locking af carefully as may be from a purely business paint of view, he cannot see why the business should not be developed to very much greater dimensions, though it is big now. Of course, the Pacific trade is in its infancy, and as yet the expenses of mainisining perfect line of ships on an Imperfectly developed trade is so great that the risk is considerable. "I quite think," said Mr. Brown, that there are now more lines runnlag across the Pacific than are warranted by the basiness at present ffering and the success of our own line, in face of the competition we have to deal with, is wholly due to the superior class of our ships and our route generally; for it is everywhere admitted that, in the interests of ultimate excellence and sopr. macy, laitial expense is never considered by the CPR.”

THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY AND STEAM- SHIP COMPANY.

Mr. D. E. Brawn, Assistant General Freight und Passenger Agent of the C.P.R., is a man of rething disposition, but hit basfness is not of the reiting kind, in fact it is not built that way at all, and so he has to overcome bis modelly and brave the terrors of publicity like any Christian who has got to be interviewed, and can't help it. Mr. Brown fully realised the situation and made a clean breast of it. He told us all about his troubles, and boomed bis Railway and steamship line into our receptive cars by the ton.

Mr. Brown has been practically in charge of the whole business arrangements of the C.P.R. on the Canadian side of the Pacific for six years

past, and is now on a general tour of inspecilen over all the ports of Asi, with the object of gaining a practical insight into the details of the work in this side, so as to enable the two sides of the Company's huge enterpries to run as harmoniously as possible, from actual contact, with each other. Mr. Brown has holds a sort of rambling commission to look generally into everything that can pasibly be of Interest to the Company in its bustness, in order to thoroughly understand the requirem-nis by coming face to face with the conditions and cir cumstances of Asiatic commerce, so that every office in the Company shall work to the most Intelligent and advanced way, from practical
