September 10th, Business in the local Share Market dur- Ing the past three days has been more extensive and more important than for many months past, and there la every appearance that the transactions arranged Inthevarious stocks were generally of a soild and reliable character. Nobody seems to know.rellably what particular cause has boomed up the Hongkong Bank's shares until they actually reached this forenoon 105 per cent. premium and continue in demand at that rate, although mysterious whispers about big orders from London, and good news from somewhere else have been circulating amongst the initiated. It lą, of course, gratifying to see so much confi- dence.shown in Banks, especially as that confidence hasa favorable influence on other local stocks; but we are unable to quite see any substantial reason for believing that the present rate will be maintained for any length of time. A jump from 75 to 105 por cont. premium within the short space of ten days as the alleged result of legitimate -investments is a somewhat big camel to awallow, and perhaps a quiet blot to our readers to 'go slow may not be out of place. China Traders have been bought and sold at 60, and additional shares could be placed at that figure. Cantons and China Fires have also been invested in at annexed quotations, and both stocks

are firm. There was considerable inquiry for Steamboats yesterday and shares are reported to have changed hands at 281. Some transactions In Douglas Steams at 36 were fixed up, and further shares are still wanted. Docks were done at 73, but very few shares were available)]. at that price. Next to Banks the sensation of the hour has been Punjoms, which have been taken up rapidly at rates varying from $1.50 to 83-50, but no very large number of shares has been secured by would-be buyers, holders, very 'wisely in our opinion, declining to sell on a rising market. The reason for an improvement | Mr, W. E. van Epi. in this stock is easily enough understood, | Mr. W. 5. Harilion, and now that the Jalis mine is once again Mr. Thomas Howard. In the Company's hands and under Mr. Mn Morton Jones, Blomey's experienced and practical Mr. V. Kofod management, It wont take long before the shareholders will have definite results one way or the other. Hongkong` Land Investments have been taken up at 55, 56, and 57, and are decidedly in.better odour than of fate. The Kowloon Wharf and Godown Co.'s scrip has also been inquired after, and a few sales, were booked at 47. Charbonnages are stationary at 113, and in other stocks nothing requires special reference:
