SUICIDE OF an English NAVAL

OFFICER.

A very tragic and sad occurrence took place on the. 3rd. Ihat, son board H.B.M,'« surveying vessel Penguin. About half-pist seven o'clock the report of firearms was heard coming from the cabin occupied by Lieut. Arthur G. Cawston, and his ship-mates on entering found that the unfortunate young fellow had blown his brains out while lying in his book, Medical sid was promptly af

at hand, but the bullet had done its fatal work and life was extinct in a few moments. The shocking occurrence became quickly known on the other men-of-war In the harbour, and all the flags were put at half-mast. A Naval, Court of Enquiry was held later on, but nothing is known of what

the deceased shot himself whilst in a state of temporary in anity. ́ ́Little or nothing is known outside of the circumstances which preyed upon the mind of the ill-fated young officer, who, as many of his "friends had recently noticed prov ously, sp cared to, be suffering from some treable, and was in a very depressed and despondent frame of mind. He had been on the bina statfon with Capt. Moore on the

·Rambler, and was regarded as a smart and promising officer, and was a favourite with his fellows.

He dined on shore with same. friends on Saturday night, and the news of his awful death was a great shock to those who had seen him full of bealth a few short hours before. There is something very mysterious in the whole business, and it is a pity that the rules of the service make Naval Courts of Enquiry private, instead of having an open inquest into the case, as would be done had the deceased been a civilian instead of a member of one of the services. The funeral took place at the New Cemetery about seven o'clock the same evening, the cortege starting from the Foochow Road jetty at half-past six, under command of LieutenantAR Talbot of H.M.S. Caroline. The cofia was bmught on shore enshrouded in a 'Union Jack' and placed in the glass heație, which "was preceded by a firing pasty of exactly a hundred bluejickets and about, forty other sea- men and marines, and was followed by a great number of officers from the men-of-war of various nationalities represented in the harbour at pre- sent. There were very few of the general public amongst the attendance, 10 few people having heard about the tragic occurrence ill after the funeral. The barial service at the cemetery was very brief, and was conducted by Rev. H. C. Hodges Mercury,

THE TRUE PROTECTION.
