AN extraordinary scene occurred at a recent Oxford City Sessions between Mr. W. H. Cooke, Young Wife-Marriage is disappolating in the Recorder, and counsel. A man named some tblogs.

Andrew Wilson was indicted for embezzling several sums of money belonging to his employers, Mesars. Atkinson, fishmongers, of Londen, who also carry on branches in the 'provinces. Evidence in support of the charge having been given, Mr. Turrell, of the Oxford Circuit, who defended, urged that the money had been expended in pushing the builness, as he alleged, in accord ance with instructions. The Jury, being some time in coming to a conclusion, one of them, in answer to the Recorder, said that, although the prisoner might have received moneys and falled to account for them in the regular way, yet that did not brand him as a thlef If he simply negligently forgot himself. The Recorder told the jury that they were to exercise their common sense, if they had any, The juryman said there was a doubt in the minds of the jury. Mr. Turrell said if there was a doubt the prisoner was entitled to an acquittal. The Recorder threatened that if Mr. Tarrell interrupted the fary he would have him. removed from the court. In any case, she has turned out just as bad speck for her purchasers as the Torrington was good; and only the purchasers are to blame, for not seeing what they were buying. Mr. Chater similarly did not know what he was getting, and it happened he got something rich; the Doriya is a converse case.. But who are the purchasers? Ostensibly. Chinese partnership, wishing to trade to Holber, with the Talkoo compradore at (is head, and the Taikoo hang au | agents. It fa stated-we reproduce the rumours for what they are worth-that the purchasers are the Taikoo partners themselves. In support of this, it is stated, and we believe it is true, that the original tenderers were a firm withing to run the Talkoo boats off the Canton deer. If that is so, it is probable enough that Mestrs. Batter field and Swire thought they could kill two stoben

with one brick, so to speak, by buying the Ooriya-stave off troublesome one competition, and start a new line to Holbowalmost the only local trade in which they have not as yet pushed their way. Their entorpelse is commendable; nobody can but praise them for extending their Irfence so widely but their gross blunder in buying ship whose faults they had not locked into is a piece of foolishness of which we would never have thought them capable; and we really believe that Mr Kiackintosh, offensive though he may be in some ways, would have saved them from this
