The order was therefore given to the runcis to fire, and fire they diỏ, killing two shopkeepers and seriously wounding three others. After this the mob cooled down, but were, never- | theless, fully determined to carry on the struggle for fairly. They therefore convened a meeting of fheadnon, who drew up a long petition to his Excellency the Viceroy in which the conduct of the Nambol and Fatshen mandarins and the Ukin magnates was severely criticised. In olden timer the people would have waited. peacefully, for the reply of the fa-fe, but times have changed and so have the people of Chios, who no longer regard their officials an so many gods; so they didn't guleted down in the usual way but were known to the authorities to be planning to attack, foot and butcher the Inmates of all the yamèns in the district by the aid of levies from Namboi and the
course city (Canton) proper. This determined on owing to the murder of the two above mentioned citizens and the failure of the Viceroy to grant with sufficient promptness tha prayer of his humble petitioners.

Yesterday the strike was kept up and ths situation looked very grave up to noon, when the Brish Acting Consul-General at Canton communicated with the Hongkong Government and obtained a promiss that the Tweed would be sent up to Canton at day-break to-day. Orders were soon received at the Naval Yard ta prepare the Tweed, then lying off the bath house, for 1-2 and in the space of an hour or so the wis ready for business, while the stokers below were firing up for all they were worth.
