THE SERGEANTS SMOKING CONCERT.
Last Saturday evening a very enjoyable smoking concert was given at the barracks under the auspices of the Staff and Departmental Mess, Serg: -Major J. Meredith occupied the chair and be was ably supported by Sergeants Ten sant, Harrison, Dawson, Philips and others, The room was crowded to excess with military and naval men, civilians and a spinkling of the ubiquitous press mea, Mr. F. A. Pearson, who performed the difficult task of accompanist threabout in bis well-known faultless style, opened the bail with an overture, and from that time up to 11 o'clock, songs, recitations, and sales followed in quick succession, amongst the most noteworthy of which were "The old Arber Tree by Mr. S. H. Clarke, Father Phil's collection for the repairs of the Chapel" (recitation) by Sergt.-Major Meredith, Mr. Abrchant's aboo solo,, being a selection from the oratorie "Martha," which was vociferously encored. Then a naval man, Mr. Usher, fetched the bouse

All the songs were well song and went down well with the aul ence who fained beastly in singing "Auld Lang Syne" after Sergeant Meredia explained, in a neat speech, that the occasion of the concert was to bid adieu friends about to
go home in the Tyne, to welcome those who remain temporally on the saff, and instil bær- many into those who remain on the permanent staff of the Garrison. A hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman and a verse of "God save the Queen" brought proceedings to a very har monious clesc.
We regret that pressure on our space forbids the insertion of such a full report as this convivial gathering deserves,
SMOKING CONCERT CLUB.
(COMMUNICATED.)
If one were to judge from the crowded audience in St. Andrew: Hall on Saturday night, this club seems to be the only flourishing musical body in Hongkong. The programme was first class in every rene and the officials concerned deserve the thanks of the members for the capital entertaimt provided The hall was crammed soon after nine o'clock and when Surgeon Lt Cal. Barrow took up the hammer at ten minutes past nine, over two hundred and fifty men must have been present. The weather was warm bat, the committee having provided plenty of fans, and ice ad ir, at no time was the atmosphere appressive.
The Shropshire Band opened the show as uuni, with a selection from "Faust up to date," which was admirably played. Mr. G. P. Lammert then gave "Good Company In splendid style, and although in just high enough a key; he took the notes in a marvellous manner. Mr. Lammert, also acted sa_socom- panist to most of the subsequent performers, Mr. Bell, R. N..sting Mr. Con. Mr. C. Taylor of the "Impericuss" gave the audience a chance of opening their lungs in the chorus of The Raspberry Tort which they took full advantage of Mr. Grace gave a sane from L Cigale "Look into mine eyes to wit-in such a taking manner that the audience recalled him and made him sing I lovethes. Mr. H. B. T. Cox was announced as making his last appear. ance in Hongkong and met with a most enthu- slastic reception, This violinist has made bimself exceedingly popular during his stay on the China Station, and we have no doubt that the Smoking Concert Club will feel his logs con- siderably. He rendered a nocture by Burg. müller in quite his old form. Lieutenant Nichol. son as usual simply "corpsed" the audience, giving a most comic rendering of " Enniscorthy" and inflowing with "I took it" in response to the uproarious "ancora,"
