But how does the case stand? According to the Chim Castoms returns the value of our idirect trade with China, which amounted in 1864 to 47,978,314 taels, and in 171 to 68,960,951 twels, fell in 1881 to 46,468,881 iselt, and in 1899 to 37,703,273 taels. It is true that the China trade with Hongkong has increased

to 104,987,865 taels in 1890. This increase is mainly due to the fact that Hongkong has become a distributing port; many of the exports, from the treaty ports, and im- ports destined for the treaty ports, being there transhipped for their final destinations. Utifort unately the Hongkong relams do not enable us to distinguish the shares in this incresse which are attributable to the different nationalities. We may, however, safely assume that the amount attributable to the commerce with Great Britain makes up, and possibly more than makes up, the falling it in our direct trade with China alace 1885 ; but it is impossible to suppose brings it up to the level of 1871.

If the publication of these figures had coincided with a recognised appearance of general pros: perity in China, one would have been foclined to suppose that the natural inference to be drawn from them might be explained away. But the recent fallars of two of the oldest established houser in China, and the serious depreciation in the value of foreign-owned property in some at least of the older porta-les ports it is true, auch as Foochow and Aming-forces on one the belief that the story which they tell in its main features is the true on
