AN OLD SPORTSMAN. Hongkong, 17th February, 1893.

THE LATE MR. J. LANGFORD COX.

A Coroner's inquest was held at the tracy to-day on the death of Mr. J. Langlond Cox, which occurred on January 3rd last

The

having ascertained, by the examination of the reb-1 chieftain Plan Yo-ito, that a formidable band of the insurgents had seized the town of Heich'angise, he marched at once in that direction. He found, the rebels had forified the place, so as to render it strong enough to withstand attack. In the neigh bourhood there were several large hulidings nted as

rent offices in connection with the establishments. of the Mongolian Pr and these two had been occupied, and idal state of defence by the enemy. Magisaacking army was ramshalled into three

columns, and wes opposed by

a party of the rebels drawn up to receive them outside of the 'mud wall which surrounded the town. A dash was made for this division of the enemy, and two or three handred of them having been ta aiantly cut to pieces, the remainder were obliged to retire into the town. Joining their companions within the walls, they continued the strugglo until the piece was aformed by the Imperialists who put eo more of them to the sword. They then retreated to a large and spacious public building on the estate of the Mongol Prince where they put up two large pieces of ordnance and maintained a life and death struggle for sight heurs, dining which time they were closely invested by the Imperialist troops. At last they were completely overcome and slaughtered in hundreds. In the town itself the buildings in which the rebels had secreted themselves were fired by the Imperiallets and the number thai thus perished is beyond calculation. Altogether it is estimated that over 1,000 of the enemy were killed on this day. The prisoners, who numbered 99 and comprised a number of ringleaders, were all decapitated,

George Curling Cox, editor of the Daily Press, said he know deceased well, but was not reinted to him. Deceased was about 33 years old and had been sub-editor and reporter under witness since March, 1887. He was latterly is pecuniary difficulties. Witness spoke to him, more than onco about this. On Friday (Jan. 22nd) witness wrote

Had heard him complain frequently of sleeplessness and pains in the head, saying he had been taking oplates and that Dr. Cowie told bits to stop doing so, Witness thought he had stopped. Deceased was a heavy drinker. "by fits and starts.",

On January

Decessed had never in conversation referred to any possibility of bis committing suicide. Witness had conversations with Mr. ex as to "ways and mean," but never attached Importance to them. Deceased had at the end of December, 1890, been given three months' notice of dismissal, which had been extended, and the letter of January and was a final intimation that bis services would be no longer required, Witness went down to Mr. Warres Smith, who told bim Dr. Cowie had seen the body and locked the room.

30 women who were rescued nud were sent back to their homes in the neighbour hood. An immense quantity of booty of every description fell into the hands of the Imperialist General Nich Kuel-iin reported that he overtook a body of the insurgents numbering over 200, encamped at a place called Tachang's, who immediately arranged themselves in battle array. and began to fire upon the Imperialists. IT seems that our reporter made a mistake yesterday in his brief summary of what occurred at the special meeting of the Licensing Justices. He said that Mr. Copil Shapiere and applied for a spirit license at his coffee shop, No. 36 Praya. That was not quite accurate. The case was put in the hands of the police, who discovered twenty ingots, valued at $120, in a house at Tal-kok-tanl yesterday. The two men in the house were asked to confide in Mr. Wise to-day, and their try was that a marine store dealer "found" to say, the other "copper found them, and the the copper and gave it to them.
