ONE of the strangest jewels which figure around the neck of the status of Our Lady of Almudena at Madrid is a ring which bears a curious connec don with the misfortunes which have to con tinually afflicted the royal house of Spain during the last two decades. It is a magnificent opal surrounded by great diamonds. The late King Allonso XII gave it to his cousin Mercedes when he was betrothed to her, and she wore it during the whole of her short married life, On her death the young King presented it to bis grandmother, Queen Christīna,, who died shortly afterward. Then it passed to the King's slater, the Infanta del Pilar. No sooner had the latter entered into possession of this fateful gem than she began to sicken, and a few days later she died.
