Tux Supreme Court of Illinols in its decision in the case of a man who coed a Bohemian parer for calling him an Anarchiat, declared that "Anarchist" is an actionable word, when uted of a person, as "thief" would be, and that it is for the paper using the word to prove the individual thus designated la an Anarchist or a thief, or pay damages.

Well, all we have to say on the subject is that it might be to the advantage of the Sadil's one reader were the "crushing out" kept on for a while and the space filled with, seme original matter, er a re-hash" of some of the Telegraph's news items, That would show enterprise at least,
SAYS the Sydney Bulletin:-Now that the legal professions have been amalgamated in Victoria by Act of Parliament, the old, hard-abell barris- ters are taking violent steps to preserve what they call their "status." They have formed a solemn Teague and covenant, described by themselves as the Bar Association of Vico-ia," and by other people, no doubt, the Devil's Ring, the members of which pledge themselves to no with any

Act, and not to recrgolae or consult or associata in say capacity with any barrister who also acts as a solicitor, or who accepts briefs from any boy- ́cotted sollaltor. In other words, the league is un legal-association, formed to violently abrogate an Act of Parliament, to interfere with the liberty of the subject, and to lotimidate men while ta pursuit of their lawful calling. Under a certain Act of George IV, which is always raked up when workmen instead of barristern practise fatimidation and go on the boycott, a good many leading legal authorities are now able to be seized by the police and sent to break road-metal In Pentridge, and doubtless that code which hits the rich and the poor alike will look after them promptly. SUPREME COURT.
IN SUMMARY JURISDICTION. (Befors Mr. Füilding Clarke, Pultne Judgs) January 26th,
THE NOBLE ART OF TIPPING THE WINK. In the suit Tang Shi against Mok Koon Fak, plaintiff (a woman) sought to recover from defendant, who is compradore to Mexsta. Butterfield and Swire certain jewellery which she stated had been given her by her mother, when dying, and entrusted to defendant only for safe keeping. Mr. Dennys was for plaintiff and Mr. Gedge for defendant.
→
The plaintiff described with great minuleness the scere at the death-bed of her mother, when the property was given to her; and her sister gave corroborative evidence. The defendant claimed that the jewels all belonged to him, and that the death-bed story was an invention. The two wamen were closely cross-examined by Mr. Gedge and the Court, as to the details of the story, and especially the manner in which the mother handed over the Jewels.
His Lordship asked where the old woman had the jewel in her pocket, or in a box, or a bag, or where?
She had them inside her ficket, and put her hand in-so (showing),
His Lordship:-I notice she is putting her hand just where Mr. Tiennys is putting bis.
Mr. Dennys assured the Court that, he only put bis hand inside bis cont alter the witnase
did so,
His Lordship :-Well, I saw you do it, Mr. Dennys, though I am sure you did not mean to do anything intentionally; but I saw you do like that, and then I saw the witness imitate. It is very objectionable to me.
Mr. Denrys reiterated his protest that he would never think of working the pantomime racket or prompting his witneis, and his action - was subsequent to hers.
Hili lordship:—I saw you do it, I did not see her do it before you, but I saw her do it after- wards. Of courte, I don't mean that you meant anything.
On further cross-examination it was clear that the witnesses were lying as hard as the besi lawyer in the Colony, and judgment was giron for defendant, with cours.
A FRAUDULENT 'CONTRACT.

Slace commercial intercourse began between western countries and China, foreigners have leased land from Chinese. It was the custom
for the lessors (natives) to hand the deeds of lands leased to the lenees (foreigners) who placed their own names on the deeds; but malpractices resulted from this arrangement, the Shanghai Taoial, the year before last, petlulosed for and obtained consent from the higher authorities to establish a Chinese Govern- ment Land Office in Hankow Road, close to the Bond. A deputy is stallóned in the office to look after everything connected with the depart- ment. Any Chinaman selling land to a oreigner must first hand over the Chinere deeds to the fao of the place, who requests the land-fice deputy to make a measurement of the land in question; then the Tastai is petitioned to cancel the native deeds, and grant in exchange | foreign title deeds in the name of the bayer. By such a method there can be no charce of selling the same lee of ground to several unwary parties. Lely in Kun-yl, Viceroy at Nanking, discovered thai, Chinese in leasing land to freigners always raised the cost to enormous figures and held back as if the Ind were something valuable. Such acts are not likely to cultivate the filendship existing between foreign countrice and Chips. His Excellency accordingly ordered the magistrate of Shanghai to instruct the fibaos that, from this time forth, Chinese leasing land to foreigners most report to the magistrate, who will examine and measure the land concerned and decide the price, forbidding any extravagant figure to be demanded. On Tuesday the Shanghai magistrate summoned the fipaos of the 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th sub-districts, and fold them. That in the event of foreigners purchasing land from Chlaese the seller, must report to him (the All magistrate) who would settle the cost. transactions in land previous to this injunction must be reported within three days." On no account will any subterfuge be permitted. The fipoor then gave their bouds, promised to obey, and retired.

CHINKIANG.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRISPONDENT,}
21st January, 1892, For some days I have raiced men engaged in deepening certain of the ponds in the neighbourhood of our port. A casual Inquiry about it brought to light one of the most praef cat pieces of charity that I have heard of the officials sitempting," Owing-to-the-drought-of- last summer, and the consequent bad crops, many of the farmers of this Fu are in very siraitened circumstances. In order to assist them with ready money, and at the same time give them a water supply against any future drought, the officials have hit upon the happy expedient of granting"so much money for the enlarging and deepening of certain ponds, the farmers themselves to do the work. am told that the year before igat as much as $120,000 was given out in this way for similar, work in this Fu. It is to be hoped that the day is not far distant when the same practical scheme will be put to work in improving, the public roads, canals, etc.
In the suit Chan Tong against L J. Hollem, plaintiff, a contractor, sought to recover $1,000 Last week a proclamation was issued for for work done under a contract at the bidding the killing of animals until there was Pokfulam Sanitarium of the French Minnow. A BIG SUCCESS, and we shall try and deserve the patronige we receive.
BEWARE OF SLANDERERS.
Our show has been in the East for years; we have lived and have spent our inducy liberally in the cities where we have earned our living.
In all this time we have never found
it necessary to make slanderous attacks upon rivals in our business. We don't believe in blackguarding others.
"LIVE AND LET LIVE"
is our motto. Besides; our show speaks for itself. A really strong Circus has no need to run down others. It is really and truly good it will draw the public upon its marks. Our show is really geod, bence we draw the public. We do not claim to be the Bamum of the East. Barnum inʼhis early' days was a great humbug, yet with consider. able merit; most of his imitatets ara, all humbug and possess no merli,
There is no hambug in our show, →ITIS-ALL-GOOD-
We don't use the name of Barnum or - Chiarini or other shewmen to draw the public to our tents. We stand on our own merits and don't shine by the light of other people. In the Circus bual- ness talent and not numbers count, Thirty good performers' can give a better show thanmany " supera,” and a lot of
