The French Government's overtures to the powers for joint diplomatic action. at Peking, accompanied by a naval demonstration at the treaty poris, have met with a distinct rebuff from the English and German governments. In diplomatic-circles here it is asid-it needs no special sagacity to discover the French game, Russia has declared her intention to hold sicof from any intervention, but her European ally. acing for her, aims to involve England la hostile treatment of the Chinese, Government, with which ere long England may find it advisable to concert in action against their common enemy. The overtures of France were intimated to the Chinese Embassy here, and also wired to the British Minister to China, whose reply advised Independent Engilah action if any be required. This enabled Lord Salisbury to tell France there was no necessity for joint or any other Interference in China.
