the past week has been more promising than for months past. Little was done for, the first three days, but since Wednesday a very considerable number of transactions have, bean put through, and we are glad to note that a very much healthier ton prevalls," But no really decided and permanent Improvement in local share matterscanreasonably be looked forsolong" as Mr. Keswick's Share Bill continues the law of this colony, This legislative abortion simply paralyses every form of ahare business, hampers responsibletraders: In their legitimate avocations, reduces the legalised Stack Exchange operations, which are everywhere recognised, to the lovel of an ordinary barter in a grocery store, depreciates the market value of shares and stocks, and raises Cain generally. already done an immensity of harm. That an evil did exist in local share dealing is only too well known from the frequent utterances and words of warning published in the Hongkong Telegraph; a remedy was needed and we suggested an effectual one; Mr. Keswick's blister is a counter-irritant far worse than the

disease it was intended to eradicate, and the sooner that fact is recognised and worked upon, the better for all concerned, and for the share prospects of Hongkong. Since our last report Banks, after changing hands at 158 per cent. premium, steadily Improved and were dealt in at as high as 162, a large number of shares being placed at Intermediate rates. For forward delivery transfers were arranged at 163 for January and 167 for March, the, stock closing in good demand with cash buyers at 162. In Nationals, Founders' shares have been done at 235, and at this rate there are additional buyers. Ordinary scrip (50/-paid up) has been exceedingly weak and is now freely offered at 60 per cent, discount. Large cash sales have to be reported in the shares of the Bank of China, Japan and the Straits-In Old ex Newat 1313 and 132, and in New only at 124, 13, and 132. There are still buyers in Old at 134 and in New at 13, but very few shares appear to be available.
