September 10th, As a result of the Imperial proclamation issued in the spring, the magistrates of Shans! are taking steps to protect the foreign residents, It is intended to take a sort of census of the foreigners, and to find out how many chien of houses they occupy. In accordance with this intention, the Taiku magistrate called at the compound of the American Board's luxion on the 8th September. He assured the missionaries of his intention to protect them in the prosecu- ton of their missionary duties. He took the names of all the foreigners in the district as well the names of the compounds where they reside and the number of ckten occupied. He also inquired particularly as to whether the mo perty was bought or only rented, and when fold that some of the property was rented, he naked how much was pald per year.
