Then came the first hitch. The frugal house- wife had provided eggs and bacon to open the sepast, and egg to each person. Peter Wong, seated next to Maggle, was offered the nearly empty dish, containing two portions, one for himself and one for his companion. He cares" (lessly helped himself to both,
"Mr. Wong, Mrs. Brown's voice sounded sharply), “You have taken, Maggie's share as well as your own,"
Ir
"Indeed 1" answered Peler Wong with an at- tempt at locularity, though he was bleaking forlously. "Perhaps you'll take one off mỹ plate, Maggis.”
"Have another erg poached," broke in Dr. Mackenzie impatiently. "Wong, you had better hand the whole plate over to Maggie."
Why asked the innocent Wong.
Dr. Mackenzie growled out an answer, which luckily did not reach his convert's car. And the meal, kept back by the doctor's orders 111 the egg was produced, finished uppleantly for most of the parties concerned.
After the table had been cleared, Dr. Mackenzie settled in an armchair, with a number of the Lancit to study. It was an uninteresting number, or rather, he was engaged in latening to the talk that was going on in an undertone near him.
Mr. Brown, under the influence of a good supper, was expanding with fatherly feeling.
"What present shall I make you, Maggle 7" She was sitting near him, as close as she could get. Which meant, su far away as possible fram the other two. Wong was holding a skeln of wool for Mrs. Brown.
Whatever you like, father," They were almost the first words sha had uttered that evening. Dr. Mackenzie stole a look at her out of the corner of one eye. She had slipped her hand through her father's arm, and was twisting about his watch-chain.
"Would you like a watch and chain, Maggie?" Before the had time to answer, Mr. Brown "Dr. Mackenzle, you must stop täis marriage," | put În :--- The doctor was leaning back in his arm- "What absurd nonsense, Samuel ! spoons and forks.""
Impossible, Mr. King. It is not my concern, you see,"
Dr. Mackenzie's voice was flurried, and bis eyelids moved more rapidly than ever. For he was heating with his bodily ears what a small voice had kept whispering to his conscience ever since, with shame belt said, that afternoon when Maggie bad brought back the books Into his study,
"Not your concem, Dr. Mackenzle? Surely you have just told me vou made the match.”
Now Dr. Mackenile had not just told him this, though Gregory King had certainly often beard it. But it was true that the doctor could not deny it.
"In as far as such a thing can be made, Mr. King" he said with something of dignity in his voles, which to Gregory seemed absurdly out of place "I have made this match. May the Almighty give his blessing on it ("
"Now, don't bring the "Almighty's name inte such an affair as thir" retorted Gregory. You try to get out of your responsiblity for bringing together two utterly unnaltable persons.by calling upon Providence to took after them. As though you could shift your responsibility on to God's shoulders! No, Dr. Mackenzie, these esaculs. tions don't deceive yourself. You are far toð clearsighted not to have seen that Miss Brown Is belog sacrificed, not for God's glory, but for what? To gratify her stepmother's spito,"
After all, Mr. King, these are scarcely your affain,"
There was a dangerous sound is the doctor's voice, King sat down in his chair, and drew it closer to his companion.
"You are right, Dr. Mackenrie," he said sorrowfully. "I have neither part not lot in this matter.

"Far better," chimed in Peter Wong, laughing, "I should get the benefit of them too, Mr. Brown. Whereas it would look ridiculous in me to wear a lady's watch.” --
At this juncture the Lancet was crushed together, and Dr. Mackenile hastily stood up.
"Is the lamp lighted in my study, Maggie ?" "It always is," said Mrs. Brown, as teatly as she dared. "I look after it myself, Maggie has nothing to do with ft.?
"Then, Brown, favor me with a few minutes there.”
The few minutes lengthened into a half-hour, The clock struck tea, Peter Wong yawned loudly, and tools hie departure. Maggle bade Mrs. Brown good night, and west up to bed.
But when Mrs. Brown, burning with curiosity, tapped at the study door to summon them to prayers, she was not enlightened on the sabject of their conversation at all. Both Mr. Brown and Dr. Mackenzie were sitting reading, as though they had done nothing else the whole evening.
And not a word did Mrs. Brown get out of her much disquieted husband all that night-W. C. Daily News

It was a small body of men to achieve the great amount of work I did; but there was an admirable spirit of unity and discipline among its members, and a respect and esteem for their officers, which accounted In a great measure for its general efficiency. The men were recruited chiefly from the swarms of sailors frequenting the port, but only the best were chosen, and in this manner the ranks were filled with rough, but honest, brave, and well-tried men, many of whom had already had a long experience of colonial life, which in many respects resembled that of the early foreign residents in Shanghai, and good and staunch fellows they always pro ved themselves whenever they were called upon sternly. They never flinched,—no matter whit the odds were brought against them, but went ahead dispersing mobs and suppressing, crime and lawlessness fearlessly ; thus, to my mind, paving the way for the prosperity' and quietners Shangbai now enjoys To Mr. Cilf ton, the first Superintendent, the three officers with whom he was associated for many years, Sergeants Watters, Jarret, and Fielding, and to the rank and file of the Shanghal Police Force in the curly days of its existence, Shanghai owes more than the vast majority of the present 'ge- neration of residents are aware of, or care to ac mnowledge.—Mercury,
