M. HENRI VAFTE, formerly Comptroller of Customs at Namdinh, is credited with having sent the dynamite parcels to MM. Constans, Elleane, and de Tylelle. Vaite committed suicide the other day, so we are likely to have to valt a long time before getting at the bottom of this sensational sawdust tragedy:

Now that it has become an assured fact that the Treasury cannot hear the burden of the increased salaries of local Government Officials which has been put upon it, the authorities have started the Inspector of Nuisances on a crusade against ty goats. The first victim to toe the scratch was one Trol Kat, who for the privilege. of keeping one of these handy domestic animals had to

ante-up five pieces of silver. But it is to-morrow that the official salaries are to be made good, for no less than one hundred and forty-six summonses have been lasted against owners of the genur "Billy," and the only one of the family that has so far escaped la our own famous Office Goat, who in defiance of the ailled forces of a degenerate Government, still waxes fat and sleek in and around the picturesque but evil-smelling pastures of Pedder's Hill. THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 1891.

TO THE EDITOR OF Tim "Honorowa Talmoxari”. SIR-I have read with indignation the letter signed by "A Shanghal Machant" in your issue of August 24th, and I recognize in it the malignant hatred of General Jones for the mem- bers of my sacred calling. He has made us a butt and laughing stock very many times, and this new story of his is on a par, with the rest of his slurs at our expense. Now I want to throw down the gauntlet to this reoffer.

THE MISSIONARY QUESTION AGAIN. TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKang TulagraiR.”

SIR-I have read with laterest the letters of your many correspondents on the time-honored subject of the foreign missiens in China, and I have been astonished at the blindness displayed by one and all to the incalculable good dene by these apostles of Christianity in the East. I have no desire to argue the question as to how many Chinese are converted to our faith or hot. Even were so disposed, I have not the Information or knowledge necessary to form an honest and valid opinion. But two things are patent to the most careless observer. The first is that the missbuarles are diffusing the English speech, and the principles of modern civilization and morally in a way that should command the admiration and respect of both agnostic and Infidel. In every treaty-port and in thousands of town and cities in the Interior are Chinese who have learned our language and some of the features of our civilization. In two out of three ansea they owe their enlightenment to the self- sacrificing labors of the missionaries and to other kladied agencies. The work done in this way is of vast benefit to China on the ene alde, and to Christendom on the other,

The second is the great amount of good done by the," medical missionarica" Theli hospitals and dispensaries are dotted all over the coast

and every year restore health to more than a million sick and ailing. Celestials Beyond the physical benefit effected, they bave done much to destroy the anti-foreign prejudices so common forty years ago, to produce a respect and love for our system of medicine and surgery, to develop a high regard for the practicioners and to undermine the idolatry which formerly formed so large a part of Chinese therapeutics. In convening with faofnis and other members of the mandarin classes, I have found that they, without an exceptfor, manifest a warm feeling of appreciation for the medical missions. In this durict (Amoy) the good done in this respect commands the praise of every one conversant with the facts.

Your's truly,

EDWARD BEDLOE. Amey, August 27th, 1891,

TO THE EDrton of the "Howɑkono TelegrapIE," SIR-Like your correspondent "C.D." whose letter have carefully read, I am a missionary of many years experience in China. While I da not endorse his rather Impolitis language, second his arraigament of the Europeans in the East for their exceeding sinfulness. I am also happy that he has thrown down the gauntlet to our enemies and taken a broad stand, against them. I thall not flerate his charges, but make one from my own personal knowledge. For many years past an eminent European physician `of great wealth and high social" position has dono a vast business in selling his own prepara- tion of morphine to the natives of the province of Folklen, and I am told of the other southern provinces of China. Wo medical missionaries encounter oplum-wrecks every day, and when we question these poor victims of that soul destroying drug, they nearly always state that they do not use the pipe, but employ Doctor -tle Hongkong pills. I have seen these pills. and they are a cheap preparation of sulphate of morphine.

They are made in millons in England by the surgeon in question and sent out here to his agents. Some go through the Chinese Customs an drugs or medicines, but vast quantities of them are taken into the interior concealed about the persons, the smaliness of the pilla sendering them a very safe and very profitable article of commerce. I do not know what the profit of this medical man may be, but his agents well the pills at 500 per cent and even 1,000 per cent, above their market value. The evil has grown to such proportions that it now causes more trouble than oplum-smoking in many parts of Fehklon. The agents or aslo men were in many instances educated by the physician and era hound to him by either con- fract or by oath. In my own experience I have come across ten of these agents and at least a thoussed #laves of the devilish habit. I have talked with medical missionaries In Foochow Amey, Tamsol and Swalow, and every one tells me that he has had a similar experience. It would be wicked enough, Mr. Editor, forin European layman to engage in so vile a calling but when the guilty party is a surgeon, wealthy, distinguished, and one who calls himself a Christian and when I have known to attend Divius service, it almost makes a poor missionary despair of ever wecompilabing any good. If you like, I will get some of my friends to write you their experiences 1
