Higher up the country becomes moun tainous and numerous beds of lava are met with, one flow, being about 33 miles across. Minerally speaking the richest bed Is that containing diamonds, through which the river has worked its way and has acted no KG natural sluice. As a rule the water is too deep for the natives to do much in the way of diving, but when the water le low, say down hundreds of Malays exploit the bed of the river 16 feet, near the bars, bringing up the gravel which they wash and search for the diamonds. The base of this diamondiferous bed is sandstone and it is where the river breaks over the reefs of sandstone that the gravel le sought, Between the bars, the death is too great. Some of the natives are said to earn as much as $15 per day by this primitive method of working, which gives an idea that with proper apparatus and engineering skill there is money to be made out of diamonds to Landak.
