SEVERAL LIVES LOST.
The typhoon or rather the edge of one-which was experienced here yesterday morning (19th Inst.), was within an ace of causing a repetition of the disaster of September 1884. Its existence was suspected on Thursday, the appearance of the upper clouds, according to Dr. Deberck's Law of Storms, Indicating a depression somewhere in the Chick Sea. On Friday this was borne out by the receipt of a telegram from Bolinao that's typhoon had passed Cape Engano, and by the peculiarly fine and transparent atmosphere here; owing to the rarefied air flowing hither from the locality of the disturbance. The barometer, too, which had previously been rising, began to fall. Towards evening it rose again, and -a-red-signal was hoisted to shew that the typhoon was over too miles away, nearly to the south of Formosa. Telegrams were sent to Amoy and Bolinao from the Observatory, suking fox hourly messages, whics soon thewed that It was coming straight for Hongkong. On Saturday morning it was within 300 miles, approximately, and by noge its direction was estimated as being between here and Foochow Mr. Judd, of the Telegraphs, was good enough to forward the messages with promptitade, and by 4 p.m. the typhoon was located about 200 miles to the east. Observations were taken twice as often as usual, and at midnight it was certain that blow might be expected, and signals were made accordingly. The weather was then fine, and almost calm. At 1245 #gon was fired; to shew that a strong gale was coming. A few minutes later the blow began, and increased in force until, at 2.45, two other guns were fired, showing that a typhoon was Imminent,

height, those on board saw the wall of the Torpedo-bost basin looming in the darkness. It was then too late to get up steam, which, we are informed, had not hitherto been: done, and she could only signal with rockets for help. Before any could barendered, however, she drifted helplessly against the angle of the wall of the basin, broadside on. The high sex dashed ber against the stone-work two or three times, breaching the port side leet, and amidships for about thirteen causing her to fill rapidly. As she struck, an ordinary seaman named Upjohn took a line and attempted to jump ashore, but the unsteady foothold caused him to slip, and he fell headlong over the side, and was hurled by the WAVES against the wall breaking his neck and bruising. every inch of his body, which was found at daylight washed ashore not very far away. The rest of the crew, which, consisted of a gunner and seven men besides the deceased, go ashore safely. Foor Upjohn was interred als after noon with fall' naval honom. A party from the Torpedo depot and Victor Emanuel were at be rester far, said, being made for removing the vessel from her present dangerous position to the dock. She is now submerged at high water, and another strong breeze would probably break her up. The Esk and Wyver had steam up and fired guns for assistance when the Tweed's danger was seen, which caused additional excitement and auxiety on their account
Considerable dissatisfaction is expressed among the seafaring community, respecting the time at which the second signals were ordered to be fired, Considerably before 1.43 0.m. there wasnoearthly doubt in the most unscientific observer's mind that if was going to blow particularly hard, and it was too late to run for shelter, or get up steam. Police boats-both launches and pull- away gigs went out as usual at two o'clock because the second signal bad not been given, and most of the gigs had very hard work fadeed to bale out long enough to keep afloat until they could regain the basin. The Trosed, it is also asserted, could have been under steam in ample time if the typhoon warning had been given when the readings at one o'clock shewed such a gale was imminent. On the other hand the Chinese on the Kowloon side took very little notice of either warning, and let their boats float or sink, as fortune directed, without taking any unusual precautions. The first batch of Hunan men who are with out occupation, property, or income, is 317 in number. H.E. ordered them to be taken by gunboat to their homes. Those who belonged to Hengyang were to receive $3 each as expenses for their land journey, and those of Changsa Ba each. On the day of debarkation they were marched from the city to Shakuan but on reaching that place their number had diminished to 180, the others having fallen out, complaining of sickness and fatigue, though the distance they had traversed was only about six miles. These invalids were handed over to the guardhouses along the road for safe keeping, and will be departed, with the next batch. The City God of Nanking was brought from the Showha district of Hunan. During the rebellion many miracles were said to have been wrought by this deity, and the Hunan men are firm believers in it offering to it incense and prayers from year's end to year's end. The 4th inst. is supposed to be the birthday of this miracle-working idol. Plays were acted by thea. trical troupes and grand sacrifices offered, the authorities, unable to proibit this festival, took precautions by despatching several detachments of guards to keep order. Some of the cargo was also damaged, which necessitated survey being held shortly after the accident. The following day some drums of acid on three cargo-boats burst and set fire to the boats and started bumplog salt water into them, Although the fire-engines got to work quickly, yet so song was the acid that for some file the water in the boats could be seen bubbling of the Quay and craft in the barbour, while the third one, at the time the reporter left, was last going down, having evidently been burst through by the acid.
