Some suspicion arising, he left the Past Office in a hurry, having urgent business somewhere else. He was captured and in due course brought before Mr. Wise. The manager of the shop identified the stamp as his, and said the prisoner had been in his employ but was not so now nor had be any authority to get the firm's letters from the Post Office. THE extraordinary spectacle of a balloon on fire was recently witnessed at Prague. The balloon, with three passengers, went up late in the after noon, ascending to a height of over 2,000 yards. At this altitude the silk split, and the balloon sank rapidly about a thousand yards. It then seems to have passed into a strong current of air, which checked its downward course, but it continued to fall, rapidly as before, ough not quite so the great alarm of the occupants it was perceived that immediately below was an Ironfoundry in full blast. The seronant was powerless to avert the fate which seemed to threaten himself and his com. panions, as they found themselves drifting towards the foundry chimneys, which were belching forth flame and showers of sparks, The car caught on one of the chimneys and was immediately ignited. Meanwhile, however, the descending balloon had attracted the attention of the people employed at the foundry, and aid of the most practical kind was speedily forth. coming. To the amazement of everyone, the eccupants of the car all escaped uninjured. The accident had been witnessed by a large number of people in the town, and produced intense excitement..

In the seventh Slavin no sooner get within range than be want for Jack's ribs with the AMIG vim as in the first round. After a break-away they exchanged a few ineffect al fong-range blows, which only farther demonstrated Jake's helplessners, Blood literally poured down his face. Some good exchanges were given, howe ever, Jake landing once fairly with what seemed to be a final effort, which only made Slevin smile,

In the eighth Jake went In' lor his saying clinches, and throughout the round the referco was kept busy separating the men. Jake once landed his left on Slavin's head but there was no force in the blow, and in the clinch which followed the Australian almost stove in "Jake's ribs. The sound of the blows was actually heard outside the clubhouse. The sympathy of the | maj:rity of the audience was with Kilrain, who was dying so pluckily,`s he really was beaten in the second round,

In the ninth and last round Jake managed to come to the scratch in pretty good shape, but after Slavin had landed upon him once or twice he was again a mass of blood. He managed, however, to get in two good blows on Slavin's bead though there was little force in them. Finally Slavin hit Jake a terrible left-hander on the neck, and Jake went down as if shot. Still game, however, Jake slowly and painfully rose, reeled and as the gong sounded had to be carried to his comer. Thus did Kilrain practically meet hit last Waterloo and passed into the ranks of second-class men. ***

In brief, it was Kilrain's fight to the middle of the third round and Slavin's from that op. Doring the first two rounds Kilrain fought bard and surprised the tall Australian by his onslaught, but the deadly work was accomplished in the third. Three or four hard blows on his stomach and a stinging shoulder thrust on the left cheek laid Kilrain, out flat on his back, and it was a close shave that be regained his feet in time. Had the electric gong been depended upon instead of Kelly's arm it is quite probable that the following ex rounds would not have been fought. Kirain was allowed every possible margin in his many falls. and Slavin's conside ration, too, spared him more than ence as he was staggering around the ring. From the third on it was not much more than a question whether Kilrain would be able to stay the ten rounds out and win the money his friends had bed on his ability to do this much,
