The Szechwan opium is most in favour at the present time, being good and cheap. It is com- puted that yo per cent. of the opium now used here is native. Reliable statistics of its quantily cannot be obtained, but the following are the different kinds for sale, with the approximate retail price per pleul: Yüanan, Tis, 344 ; Kwei- chow, Tis, 425 Szechwan, Tis. 304; Shearl Tis, 278; Honan, Tis. 249; Hupel, Tis, art. Of the last named very little is produced, for it is very strong and the demand is limited.'

One well-known native bank, the Yuan Feng Chiu, has gone into liquidation In consequence of losses sustained by the fallure of a large tea hong in Hanan which they have not been able to make up, and a few small failures are reported; but on the whole the year was a much better one all round for the native merchants than 1889.

This was a day of sensations in the baccarat case. Gordon Camming, though the verdict was against him,' was cheered as he left the court and cheered by the crowd in the Strand. The defendants, who gained the verdict, were. hlased so heartily that they remained in a private room until the crowd dispersed. Lord Coleridge's charge was dead against Camming, Wales was not present. He went to Ascot, Coleridge was very tiresome. He does not like elaborate sumenlogs up.
