UNDER the heading "Important to Government Debtors," the Straits Times of the 6th inst. 37-A case of considerable importance to Government debtors, and especially so to witnesses who are bound over to give evidence at the Amize Court, came on for hearing before Mr. Justice Goldney on Monday, when the Attorney-General applied for an order for the Arrest and committal of one Sowsah Merican. The facts of the case briefly are'as follows:-A man named Sowsch Merican was bound over to

Also, that the signatures to bills of 1:ding will be those of Japanese officers. With respect to the last. proposed alteration, it is open we believe to question, as to whether under Japanesa law, Japanese signatures will suffice, since to make signatures are essential. It is possible that Japanese documents binding, seals rather than foreign banks may entertain objections to the acceptance of bills of lading with Japanese signatures only, for apart from anything else, it will be next to impossible to challenge and detect forgeries, should such be attempted.

A NEW steamer-the Loo Sok has been added to the fleet of the Scottish Oriental Steamship Company. She was piloted hither from Glasgow (having been hailt by the Fairfield Co.) by Capt. Benson, arriving this morning. She is 1,020 tans register, 270 feet long, and 36 feet beam.
FIVE Chinamen were charred at the Police Court this morning with gambling in a house in Gilman's Bazaar, last night. Acting Inspector Mann gave the usual details of arrest, and the keeper of the house was fined $5 or fourteen days, the rest of the defendanta being Sued a dollar each.
LAST Wednesday morning Messrs. Mackenzie & Co.'s compradore's office. At Shanghai, was broken into and 15,000 car stolen from the compradore's morey box. The thief actually took 20,000 cask, but being unable to carry 10 much away, he dropped 5.000 cash outside the room. He bad bitten off more than he could chew.

Chau U Fal and Ho Ying Ming, of the Ping Ki shop, Praya Central, were summoned before Mr. Wite, at the Police Court this morning with having unlawfully and wilfully made a false declaration, contrary to 18 and 19, Vic sec, 91, on the 6th Aprilleat, Mr. Stokes, Acting Crown Solicitor, prosecuted, and Mr. Ewens, of Messrs. Ewens and Reeze, defended the first, and Mr. Caldwell, of Messra, Caldwell and Wilkinson, the second defendant. 4!"

Mr. Stokes asid be proposed to take the cases reparately, and would take the case against Chau U Fai first. He then read the charge.
Mr. Ewens submitted that the Court had no jurisdiction to try who the owner of the ship was, and that it ought to be a civil case.
Mr. Stokes said the defendant was charged with having made a false declaration; the question was not whether the defendant was the owner or not.
The

The evidence of Ye Shan and Leong Fat went to show that prisoner had set up a gambling place. Yu Shan saw prisoner attacking a man, and at once called out to his friends; Toh Sin then cat down Yu Shan, and some fifty, or sixty on each side took part in the fight.
The Sikh watchman stated that he did not see any blow struck, os immediately the disturbance began he ran away, and did not retura until all was quiet.
