FIRST DAY-THURSDAY 19TH FEBRUARY. Acald drizzling rain, which gradually increased in volume as the forenoon advanced, with beavy 1 banks of clouds rapidly closing in all round the. island, lorked anything but a cheerful prospect for the opening day of Hongkong's annual carnival, After about six months of continuous dry weather, it seemed as if old Jupiter Pluvius, out of pare derilment, had fly determined to make things as unpleasant as possible for race-goers and holiday-makers, and in consequence language was freely used on the Rialto and elsewhere that i might have shocked refined ears, and anathemas were flung as freely round as rice at a fashion- able wedding. Owners of race-poules and the aporting fraternity generally were in trying dilemma; if heavy rain continued to fall, plates for the pontes would be a rive gud now, and notwithstanding the energy and willingness to oblige of the Messrs. Kennedy of the Horse Repository, the appliances of that useful establishment could scarcely be expected to successfully cope with the formidable task of "plating" from fifty to sixty ponies within an hour and a half; and there was the chance, remote one It certainly appeared, that after all the rain would hold off. And, as is not infre quently the case in Hongkong, the unexpected did happen, and by noon the backers of the Derby favorites had their perturbed spirits set at rest by the sun forcing his way through the murky firmament and ensuring a sound and fast course and an alternoon's sport under exceptionally favorable circumstances.

The route to the Happy Valley presented the same features with which the experience of years has made is all so familiar. Chinese rascaldam was on the war-path in its thousands upon thousands, and carrying on the hundred and one systems of barefaced robbery, so essentially Celestial, with fmpudence unparalleled.

In

rior to the Derby jackeys weighing out, by weigh in. Considerable sensation was caused, report that Mr. Hatchings, where services bad heen specially secured to ride Starlight, could not scale under test, rib., and as a consequence the position of the favorite was greatly shaken. Other more or less disquieting rumours were current on the reputed authority of Mr. Hough, Thording other prominent candidates. Merry and it was was certain to do inside 314, common talk that Ardent had been proved the better of the pair and that this discovery had led to some unpleasantness between the rival jockeys of "the princely house," Gallant was so down as certain to make a bold bid

for victory in the accomplished hands of Mr. Maclean; but maler tout, the Boxey Lodge contingent continued remarkably confident, and no reasonable offer against Royalty, who cartled Mr. Pond and a winging, declaration, was refused by the maraerous agents of the stable, Astute critics could not see where Royalty's claims fairly came in, but all the same Mr. Chater was unusually confident and as it afterwards proved, not without ample grounds. There were eleven starters and an excellent start was accomplished at the third attempt, Crown Diamond, on space-making mission, st once rushing to the fore, closely pursued by Gallant and Chimera. Starlight lying fourth, followed by Reciprocation and Royalty, the Ewo pair nex, and then came Austerlitz, Major Hannay op Vampire being outpaced from the start.

The pace was hot throughout, Crown Diamond going at score and covering the first two furlongs in 31 seconds, the halfimile ia 624 and the three quarters in 1.341, the positions described remaining practically unchanged. Rounding the turn past the bidge Crown Diamond shot his bolt, Gallant taking up, the running, but a few strides farther on the wearer of the "Z-tland spots" was challenged on either hand by Royalty sind Reciprocation, and this rio raced up the hill, closely pursued by Gallant was Merry Thought and Ardent. the first to give away and then, in descending came out alone, and the race was over, the gigantic grey streaming along the straight by bimself and winning easily by several lengths from Rayalty, who ran with wondrous gameness, with Reciprocation a good third, Gallant fearth, Merry Theught filth, and the others widely scattered. The full time, 3 min. 12 sees, is the best on record for the Hongkong Derby, and has only been beaten twice in the annals of racing in China-by Teen Kwang at Shanghai and Pao-shing In Hong kong. There was comparatively little enthusiasm displayed, and the victory could scarcely be described as a popular one-not that that maker much difference in Hongkong, where sporting sentiments, and even higher feelings, are cheer. fully sacrificed where the almighty dollar in concerned

The old rivale quickly drew away by themselves at a ranling pace, and shot past the Valley Stakes starting post almost neck and pick, both jockeys sid- hard. Rounding the tura Skipjack, ng on the ralls, drew clear, but on the hill Suscwind was again level, the half-mile occupy ing exactly 51 seconds, Sunewind refused struggle before reaching the village, and as Skipjack was perceptibly tiring, the race lorked a gist for Autocrat, who came with a wet sail at the top of the straight, and at once challenged for the lead. Vigorously ridden by Mr. Reynell, Skipjack struggled gamely on, but the pace had been too killing and exulting shouts were raised: for Mr. Chantrey's grey, when suddenly Merry Christmas on the rails and Duneraggan on the inside appeared on the SCCA DOB srored
