One great, if not the greatest improvement in the tobacco industry is to o be found in the greatly increased bealth of the coolies, more especially on the Kinabatangan river. This is due partly to the most unremitting attention on the part of the medical officers in charge of the plantations, and the presence of large vegetable gardens which are now to be found on all the principal estates, while fresh fish is plentiful and castly procurable article of diet. This altered state of things has put the coolies In good heart and desertions are gradually became ing very uncommon. Here was material for Worstman to work upon by reat mail he quietly sent heme full particulam of the whereabouts of the defaulter. Also that he would be happy to assist in kls ap- | prehension and the recovery of the money. If a warrant were sent out the arrest could be effected, and Wiliams deported back to Liverpool. The man was all that Wurstman wanted to be rid of. As to the money, or the property it now repre- seated, he would take care of that. It was. necessary only in the meantime to make as much profit of it as possible, as also to see that the assets we e kept not in money, but in portable and easily realisable from. When Knoulton was in custody, and so commercially dead, it would thus be easy for Wurstman to adininis or the estate.
In a few months out came the warrant for Knoulton's arrest, which Wurstmas placed in the proper police-hands. He did not appear himself in the affair, at which he expressed well simulated surprise. His condolence and sym pathy were taken as genuise by Kanulton, who now entrusted everything to him. It was notice to appear against the arrested man when brought able that the best legal advocate was engaged

A visil to Europe was next proposed to his wife and two surviving sisters. The mother assented to it as some relief to them from the grief they felt for their inte sister's untimely death. It afterwards turned out that Worstman bed induced both of the young women to raise money to a large amount by mortgaging their income. There was no need, really for their doing this and taking with theas 5,000 for their European trip, Wurstman had no doubt, as their prime adviser in the matter, his own evil motives, and. those alone actuated them in what was done. Their eyes were never opened to his real cha- racter. Their belief in him was that of the weak in the strong. Hii mind subdued theirs. In his company;
