It is well known that a clergyman may buy a sermon, an editor a leader, and a judge a judg ment, but we never knew that a novelist had a golden way to a plot. Perhaps the statement is to be taken cum grano 'salis ; but it in naserted by those who pretend to enlightenment in such affairs, that a novelist who is gifted with the pen of
a teady writer but not with the faculty to evolve a good plot, or is too lazy, may, for small sum, have prepared for him all the involu tions and evolutions of a story, with a full com plement of heroes, villains, lovers, heavy fathers, scheming mothers, and all the rest of it. The
next step will be to complete, the novel and sell it to those who desire to pose as authors. Per- haps that is done too; who can say ?
MILN says that Mrs. Brown-Fotter is now twenty times more of an actress than when he saw her in Amerika, and Mrs. Potter could return the compliment, no doubt. There is a great almilarity between the two cases.
