Identify two of the pirates. The photo of the one pointed out by him, in the book of criminals, was certainly one who was on guard on the companion. He had a revolver and sword in bis possession. He was dressed like an ordinary Chinese shopkeeper. He (witness) was almost sure, also, that the photo of one other pointed out was the man who took all the passengers' valuables. He did not notice any one whe

appeared to be the leader. The two last photos pointed out by him (witness) were the pirates, stationed on the companion when he and the others were being driven into the captain's cabin. A stinkpot was thrown against his cabin door, and set fire to the carpet. He extinguished the fire with a jug of water.

At this point the inquiry was adjourned until Wednesday, the 17th inst.

The Sanitary Superintendent's report for November was laid no the table. One of the paragraphs stated that on the 8th November Information was received that the cattle on a Ruslan transport (the St. Petersburg) were suffering from disease. The animals were shipped at Vladivostock.

Mr. Ede said the burial of one carckas on shore, before the sanitary authorities had any thing to say on the matter, was not the right thing. It ought to have been taken out to sea like the rest. Who authorised the burial-the commander on his own account?

The Secretary shid he believed it was done by the people on board the ship, The animal died in the morning, and he got information' about noon that the Interment had taken place. There

The brokers in Singapore are, says the Fre Press at last moving in the matter of forming an Association anal to-day, a circular letter has been sent out to those who practise in that branch of business inviting views on the subject of co- operation with the above object. The two chief suggestions that are made in connection with. the proposal concern the public on the one hand and the brokers on the other. At present the question of commissions is entirely und fined, and brokers may, and do charge, whatever rates seem right to themselves. Such an Indefinite state of things claerly teaves the way open to great im gulrity in the carrying on of to obviate share business, and in order the objections arising from this it is proposed regarding rates of commission and publish the rates agreed upon for the information of the Investing or share-dealing public. The other important suggestion is that there should be a Committee, say of three, who would not only act generally as the representatives of the associa tion in matters where their interests were con- cerned, but would act as a sort of arbitrating

The telegram which to-day chronicles the conviction of a woman for murdering another woman and a chi'd ends a story of illicit love and crime-sordid in detail, but evidently over. masterlog in passion. The body of a murdered woman, with her head nearly severed, was. found in by-road at Hampstead on the night of the 23rd October last, and an infant child subsequently identified as hers was found dead not far from the spot. The newspaper report of the discovery caught, next day, the attention of some relations of a Mrs. Hoge, the wife of a furniture remorer, she having left home that same evening with the child, and having never been head of afterwards. On the dy before the murder, the deceased had received tence, asking ber to make a call. The deceased's sister-in-la consequently inquired of Pearsey an admitted that Mrs. Hogg was at ber home at o'clock that Friday evening. Pearsey accompanied this witness reluctantly to view the body of Mrs. Hogg at the mortuary. The sister in-law identified the body, but Pearsey did not. would not touch the corpse, and showed herself so much I at ease, that the suspicions of a detec-body which might take cognisance of any differ- tive Inspector present were aroused. in connection with the relations of brokers to their clients, the subject might be referred for adjudication. By the rules and regulations which the Association would draw up for its guidance and working, due care would be taken to provide for the exclusion from the benefits and prestige of membership any broker who. should be proved to have acted in such a way as 10 have been guilty of gross "unprofen sional" conduct. Association would vouch for their trustworthiness. Such an Association an that projected would have stood in the way of the extensive amateur brokering that was indulged in about the height of the mining share boom here, greatly to the detriment of the regular brokers, and to the derangement of the legitimate share market. Sould the Singapore brokers succeed, as it is to be hoped they will, in coming soon to an agreement about constituting an Association, it would be a proper thing for them to invite the Government to give them as indication as to the precise policy propourd to be embodied in the legislation that is understood to be in pre- paration on the subject. It is obvious that any view formulated by a representallye body like the Committee of the Brokers Associa tion would meet with more respectful attention than the tray views gathered from Iresponsible

units. There is but little doubt that bad the brokers formed an association working under a body of sound rules, approved of, sw, by the Chamber of Commerce, and honestly admini- stered by their own Committee, there would probably have been no present talk of legislation and indeed it is as likely as not that the pro- posed Association will be able to achieve for itself and the publle the greater part of the protection against abuse than could be provided by the law.
