Notwithstanding their wanton cruelty in murdering two men in cold blood, boaty seems to have been the chief object of the pirates, for had they chosen they could have massacred. every living soul on board. They store in and destroyed every boat on the ship and it really seems that at one time the fate of their unfor tunate captives hung in 'the finest of balances." No doubt the miscreants were highly pleased at the successful issue of their adventure, and having made such a prize wero anxious to get off with it. On coming to anchor at or about 7 o'clock they signalled to four confederate junks which were waiting for them; these came along. side and took the body on board. They are supposed to be Hongkong junks but no one, apparently, was in a position to take their numbers. When all was ready and the junks loaded the pirates forced the firemen to draw the fires and also to blow sicam off, and as a reward

for these services threw them a bag of dollars (supposed to be about 100) before finally taking their departure. Once over the side it may be supposed that it took but a short time for the prisoners (who had hitherto been barricaded in the state-room, guarded by four pirates) to break out. The ancher was slipped, steam gat up and the Nanton, under the commod of Mr. Eldridge the chief officer, made the best of her way out to sea, and was safely brought into Hongkong harbour at Bo'clock this morning. It's seldom that such a tale of the sea is to be told in considera- these days, but all things taken int tion the marvel is that so many escaped with their lives, which doubles they owe chicfy to bad marksmanship and faulty weapons. Besides Captain Pocock and Mr. Petersen, who wereshot down in what can only be called cold-blood, the pirates are responsible for the lives of two Malays, one of whom they wounded and threw overboard and another who died in the Civil Hospital this morning from the effects of a shot in the groin. There are also two Chinese cooks who are wounded, and the and engineer who was shot through his wrist, and the 3rd officer who has a bullet in his arm. The latter four are in the Civil Hospital whither they were removed on the arrival of the Namoa this morning, and where, under the skilful hands of the talented medical staff of that institution, they will doubtless retelve every attention and speedy relief,

We are courteously informed that H.M. gunboat. Linned will leave for the scene of the|| attack to-morrow morning taking with her Captain Stewart of the Chinese Revenue Service. No doubt every effort will be made to bring the miscreants to justice,

CORRESPONDENCE.

THE SHOCKING PIRACY AFFAIR.. To The Emirox of the "Horokona Turnerari.", DEAR SIR-After reading the report, in your "Extra," of the dastardly acts of pirates on board the Names while on the high seas Fetween the port and Swatow yesterday, and gathering thereby an idea of the skilful and complete arrangements made by the villains who carried out their deadly intentions with such complete success bearing in mind, too. the sad affair, of a similar nature, that occurred on board the Greyhound in October of 1885 I, and doubtlest many others also, have come to the, conclusion that some thorough preventive measures are an absolute necessity. "As in the Greyhound affair, so in the case of the Namoa, the dastardly ruffians all went on board the steamer, in this colony, as passengers, carry- ing with them their deadly weapons either in their bogus baggage or concealed on their person. Now it is clear that the danger to which the travelling public and seafaring people are exposed, when sailing out of Hongkong, can only be removed by striking at the very root of the evil, which lies in the fact that there are not sufficient means at the Government's disposal prevent passengers from going on board vessels with arms and ammunition. In the ports of China and Japan, this can be, and is, prevented by the Customs officers, but nothing of the kind is done here. Even after the slocking revelations in connection with the Greyhound piracy. no steps were taken to prevent a repetition of those borrible atrocities. I maintain, and with reason, that a preventive service thould be inaugurated bere, and no ship be allowed to sail from the waters of this colony until every passenger and all the passengers' baggage has been thoroughly, searched and the whole. ship carefully inspected, not only by the regular preventive officers, but also by special detectives. Had this been done years, age neither the Greyhound nor Namen affair would have cropped up to cast an indelible blot upon our shipping regulations and police system generally.

It will be an Intercating consideration for us,”

The Premier declined to enter lito political prophecies, the futility of which, he said, recent events had shown. For instance. Boulanger won the bye-elections in all the elections of France, bu failed to win in the end; skilled wire- pollers in Americs vere surprised at the sudden uprising of free trade, and European political men were equally astonished at the defeat of the Government in Greece.

Despite the order fasued by the Government prohibiting the emigration of pensants and Polish Jews to Brazil, 30,000 have left Russia for that country during the past three months.
