Information just to hand regarding the latest prices for British North Borneo tobacco shews that the crop raised on the Darvel Bay planta. Hons has realized 157 guilder cents, and the tobacco from the Melapi Estate (which is believed to be the China Borneo Co.'s property) These figures has fetched 151 guilder cents, should be most encouraging, not only to the. shareholders of these estates but the other planters, as the prospect of the crops some SUPER months back was not a very bright one. It also shows that a really good quality tobacco can be obtained in these places; and after the first expense of clearing and coolie importation, has been overcome, tobacco planting in Borneo may yet become a profitable enterprise.
Mr. R. J. Dunlop reports that while at Pagalan some Klappan Dusuns came down and reported. their own (Klappan) people. The murder was instigated by a Kimanis man who was trading in company with the Chinaman. He sent a note to Mr. Wheatley at Gaya informing him about it, and told the Dusuns who reported the matter,

meeting and in reply he said-Gentlemen, in closing this meeting I have to congratulate you on the satisfactory manner in which your com- mittee has brought this institution into existence (applause). Of course it is not easy to please every one at all times, but nevertheless I am glad to notice that there is such a manifest good feeling and unanimity amongst the large number of cagineers present. I thank you heartily for the honour you have done me in favouring me with your choice as President and I am convinced that if you all strive earnestly to make this institution a success it will soon prove itself worthy of the young and go ahead,
colony in which it is to-night founded. I again tender you, one and all, my warmest congratula tions and wish you all, the success that the most sanguine amongst you may aspire to (loud

A member-Before we separate I think you will all agree that a very hearty vote of thanks is due to Messrs. Carmichael and Kew for the trouble they have taker in bringing about the establishment of this iositution, "They, gentle- man it was who first conceived the idea and we shall doubtless yet have cause to be very grateful to them (applause). Mr. Aitken seconded and the vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.. Mr. Carmichael said he and his partner had done their best for the engineers; they were very glad to see the institute was now N falt accompli, and they wished it God-speed. (Applause).

SWATOW.
(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.)
Swataw, December 2nd, 1890.. Swatow has again attempted to issue from its wanted crepuscular, state; at all events if marri ages beteken a certain degree of enlightenment, then surely realdents bere have every cause to congratulate, themselves, whether the young men are blessed with an inordinate amount of susceptibility, or whether the ladies possess an extraordinary fascinating influence may be rather difficult to determine, still the fact remains that, periodically we boldly rise from our somewhat lethargic condition and endeavour to uphold the deservedly popular reputation of the port for marrying and giving in marriage. And se relative to the above:-The marriage of Miss Piersdorf, daughter of Captain Plensdorf, Double Island, to Mr. Fatherstonbaugh, a most genial and much respected member of the Customs Staff-was duly solemnized, first at the British Consulate and afterwards in church, on the 6th ultimo. The bride looked lovely in a dress of white Chinese silk with a square train of brocaded silk, and on her head aicathof orange blossoms and embroidered veit. She carried a bouquet, composed of white chrysanthemums and Camelias and the final touch was given to her dainty appearance by a pair of pretty little satin shoes. She was led into church on the ̃armi of Mr. Streich, H. I. G. M.'s Consul, and was followed by two beaming little girls as brides- maids, who bore the train. They were dressed In cream colour with silk sashes, and leghorn bats fastened up at one side by a bow of cream ribbon, they also wore gold brooches, the gift of the bridegroom, and carried a basket, each, of -chrysanthemums and plak rose buds.
The
I can but very inadequately describe the different arrangements. galaxy of the scene was increased by the decorations in church. Great praise is due to Mrs, Hill, Mr. Allum, and other ladies, who on such occasions have ever distinguished themselves by the very tasteful manner in which they have carried out the many very appropriate decorations. A red carpet was laid from the door right up to the altar for the bride to walk on, and on each side of this pots of chrysanthemums and crotons were neatly distributed. The alter itself was covered with ferns and chrysanthemums, space behind being filled up with pots of brilliant coloured crotons, ferns and bamboos.
the
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mrs. Hill played the "wedding march" as the happy couple walked out; the pathway before them After this, the being strewn with flowers. guests were conveyed to Double Island where a splendid breakfast was provided. At 5 pm, after being supplied to the full extent with rice and old shoes, the happy pair departed on their honeymoon. Eucals retired and reached Swatow again Just at dusk, each having enjoyed themselves Immensely. The young unmarried ladies more particularly being evidently greatly impressed by the occurrences of the day,
Two days later than this, on the 28th (mercies like misfortunes lavariably follow each other) we had a very successful St. Andrew's Hall" It is quite unnecessary, however, to go lato details, sufficient to say, nearly all the residents (European) in Swatow patronized it. Suppar was served at midnight. The ladies retired at 3. a.m. but even after this the "Highland dew tasted just as sweet.
that the best course for them to take was to capture the actual murderers and convey thera to Gaya. He pointed out that by doing so they would not only prove their own fidelity to the Government but would save a lot of police being sent up to capture the culprits,, under which circumstances, If resistance was offered, more than the actual murderers might suffer.
In consenting to the establishment of a
