It was industriously rumoured that Eiffel was the better of Mr. Sassoon's pair and a likely winner, but the public would not be stalled off the shapely brown and he started a bot favorite, Visitation and the veteran Dunkeld being also well supported. That the talent were correct in their estimate was quickly demonstrated, as Hollyhock, after racing Dunkeld to a complete standstill in the first quarter, cantered down the straight in front of is field and won without being fally extended Gerald beating the wearer of the green for second place, in the last few strides. The time, 59 seconds, was very fast considering the easy way. In which Hollyhock won, and it is quite probable had Mr. Dalias ridden the winner clean out, that the record for this distance, 57 seconds by Ravenscote in the Spring, of 1875, would bave been lowered Considerable interest had been evinced as to which of the three "cracks," Zephyr, Eureka, or Hero, would carry silk for the leviathan stable in the Criterions, and during the morning it was generally reported that to Eureka would be

Blazer shared favoritism with Gerald, and the accuracy of public opinion was shown by the result of the race, the Ewo representative winning from the white-faced chesnut by a short neck- lucky win, as Blazer was left at the post and was yet well in front two strides past the post Dunkeld broke down at the top of the straight when leading, and has probably ended blu racing career-s

BOTH Mr. Wise and Mr. Wodehouse had a "go in" at gambling house managers this morning. Mr. Wise investigated a case brought to bis notice by Inspector Swanston respecting a "den" in Jardine's Bazaar which he raided a day or two ago, and alèzed therein a couple of game conductors, whom the magistrate promptly jailed for three months. Detective-Inspector Stanton was in charge of the other case, in which a weaver, a carpenter, a slavee, and a barber were charged with keeping a public gambling house at No. 5, Graham Street. The evidence adduced was as clear as daylight so Mr. Wodehouse consigned the crowd to the care of the gaol authorities for a period four calendar months; shot-drill, oakum picking, cell cleaning and a few odds and ends being thrown ia as "mere incidents of a gaol sojourn of four months' duration, under the auspices of Her Majesty's Government.

all this, Vagrant, Autocral and Ners were backed with a good deal of spirit. The race requires little description, as the skewbald jumped away in front, made the whole of the reaning, and after easily stalling off a desperate challenge from Vagrant at the top of the straight, won in a canter by a couple of lengths in the excellent time of 3 min. 49 4-5th secs., and finishing the Criterions. Vagrantran a good, game pony, as did the powerfully built Autocrat, and the penalised Nero performed sufficiently well to show that with a stronger sider in the Maidens', Mr. Middy's grand looking pony--a cut-off from Mr. Humphreys'stable by the way, and at one time a favorite for the Hongkong Derby of 1889 under the name of Veteran-must have been dangerously near winning. The China Cup resulted in a rare upset and one of the most popular victories of the day. In spite of his 5lb. penalty Orange Peel was greatly fancied, and on his running in the Maldens it certainly looked "a good thing," although in some well informed quarters doubts were freely. expressed as to travel the extra quarter of a mile. That this report was well founded there cannot be the slightest doubt, as Mr, Dallas actually went into the weighing room to scale for Earcks, and it was only when Mr. Read had weighed out for Home Guard and his number had been placed on the board that the plan of operations was changed, Hero being winner of 1888. This was certainly very sharp practice, and is scarcely calculated
to enhance the popularity of Mr. Sassoon with those who have hitherto segarded him as a straightforward sportsman, far above such a contemptible subterfuge. As Mr. Sassoon does not bet and races for pure love of the game, it is a great pily be should allow his racing policy to be directed by influences so prejudicial to true sport and to his own reputation as aracing owner. in a field of nine for the Criterions odds of 5 to 2 were laid on Hero, and the skewbald won cleverly at last from Home Guard, but he finished in such bad style, sprawling all over the course, that had Mr. Syiva's pony been more judiciously ridden the result would probably have been differ- the don's ability Will the

Mr. Whitehead gave notice that at the next meeting Es would ask the following questions: Is the Government aware that the water supply to the Robinson Road district was eat off for several days last week, and that no notice what- ever was given of the fact so as to allow the lubabitants to make provision to obtain water from tome other source? Is the Government aware that there is a very great scarcity of water in the western district at the Peak, and will the Governmentslate what measures they are taking, or propose to take, to meet the emergency?
His Excellency replied that if he were in a position to give the information asked he would gladly do so, but he might say that he had already anticipated the question.
