Some aix and a half years ago the a spirit of indignation, that in many community of Hongkong were aroused to colonies would have culminated in riot and bloodshed, at the refusal of a Roman Catholic priest to perform the last rites over the body of PEDRO DA COSTA, Secretary of the Hongkong, Canton, and Macao Steamboat Company, a universally respected citizen and a thoroughly good man, who was killed by the explosion on board the steamship Yosat, in the Canton river. The disciples of Pxzxx the Fisherman even refused to allow all that remained of poor COSTA to sleep with his ancestors in the Roman Catholic cemetery an arbitrary piece of impudence that, anywhere but in a British colony, would, under the circumstances, have inevitably led to troubles of a most serious character. The ostensible defence of the holy (?): fathers for their coarse brutality was that the deceased had been a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity; the real reason W33 that DA COSTA, & writer of more than ordinary ability, was the author of an exceedingly clever

Mr. Bibby, the mine manager of the Raub Australian Syndicate, arrived here "from the mines yesterday and was interviewed by a reporter of the Straits Times, when matters affecting the present and fature outlook of the Syndicate's property in Pahang were discussed, With regard to the first telegram, the explane tion given by Mr. Bibby as to the words "crush. ing prospects Indifferent." is that it should have read "middling," and that it was never his bad impression as to intention to convey the likely result, It was impossible, Mr. Bibby said, for him to give the weight of gold obtained, because the metal is so mingled in what known as with quicksilver amalgam.
