A PRODIGY is reported from the Canton province. At Su Wal, a woman of jo summers is said to have given birth to a child-a bright-looking bor recently. Her husband is 71 years old. This elderly couple have already a large number of grand-children and great-grand-children living. Not content with this fruitful progeny, they adopted some time ago a child as their son; but the little fellow died, "which caused great sorrow to the worthy people, who have ever since been invoking the gods to send them: another child in place of the one taken from them. They had led exemplary lives, so the deities were pleased to pity their bereaved condition, and, have now sent them this last child to comfort them in their old age. Hongkong, 30th August, 1890. Throughout the week affairs onthe Share Market have been exceedingly brisk. After the monthly, settlements, which, we are glad to say, passed off most satisfactorily, business was actively resumed, and as public confidence has apparently been restored so far as most of the popular stocks are concerned, rates all round have been maintained and continue to show an upward tendency.

Banks weakened slightly immediately after the settlements, some shares changing hands at as low as 220 per cent. premium, ex. div., but a re-action quickly set in and the rate advanced to 224, closing, however, with sellers at that figure. For forward. delivery a large number of shares have been negociated at 226 and 227 for September, and 228 and 230 for October; There are further sellers at the higher rates. New Issues dropped to 195 for cash, The various Governments and Municipal Cora fair quantity of scrip being picked #P: porations, and all Public Bodies and Companies, but the price rapidly advanced to 215, and Bankers, Merchants, Consuls, Professional men, a lot of shares were placed at Intermediate and other Residents, have supplied the necessary rates. The market closed with cash sellers matter, upon forms specially went for that pur- at 207. pose so as to ensure accuracy. The Naval and Military portions have been taken from the latest published official lists and revised at Head-quarters: In fact, no pains have been "pared to make "THE HONGKONG DIREC. TORY AND HONG LIST FOR THE FAR EAST" a handy and perfectly rellable book of reference for all classes.

THE Hon. A. P. MacEwen was entertained to a farewell dinner by the members of the Golf Club at the Hongkong Hotel on Saturday night last.. Commander Rumsey, R.N., captain of the Club, ecoupled the chair, with the Hon, N. G. Mitchell-Innes as croupier, and amongst the forty "goffers" present, in addition to the guest of the evening, were the Acting Chief Justice (Mr. Fielding Clarke), the Hon. P. Ryrie, the Hon. S. Brown, (Surveyor-General), Major Hannay and a powerful contingent from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders," and other well known residents. After doing justice to the excellent dinner provided, Com- mander Rumsey in felicitous terms proposed Mr. MacEwen's health, referring to his long residence in the colony, the valuable services he had rendered in the Legislative Council and to every branch of manly sport, and especially emphasising the material and active assistance he had given in making the ancient and royal game of golf a success in Hongkong. The toast was drunk with Highland honours, and in responding Mr. MacEwen was greeted with great enthusiasm. The Handicap Challenge' Cup, presented to the Club by Mr. MacEwen, was then formally handed over to the first winner, Mr. Wade Gard'ner, and after a litle ceremonial with a magnum was handed round the table for Inspection, Speeches were rade by Mr. Ryrie, Dr. J. A. Lowson, and Mr. Mitchell-Innes, and after the arrival of the Pipe-Major of the High. landers a very pleasant evening was passed to the inspiring strains of the bagpipes, «

Probably the biggest transfers of the week have been made in A. S. Watson & Co.'s stock, very large transactions, amounting to thousands of shares, having been booked at from 21 to 24 for cash and from 23 to 253 for December. In connection with the business in this stock, we hear that an action for slander is likely to result, with a leading sharebroker as plaintiff and a well-known local celebrity, whose injudicious freedom of speech and general officiousness are proverbial, as defendant. We, of course, cannot at present enter into minute details, but it appears that an entirely unfounded canard, doubtless set going by would-be "bears" for interested purposes, to the effect that "THE HONGKONG DIRECTORY AND the largest holder of Watson's scrip had CHINA COAST METEOROLOGICAL LANCKFIELD, British bark, odi, Burns, th HỌNG LIST FOR THE FAR EAST" offer | " unloaded" to the tune of 5000 shares, Special Advantages as an Advertising Medium was seized hold af by the gentlemen

There is not space in the compass, of an Onlinary Advertisement to detail all the informa tion introduced into the work, but it may be fairly asserted that no such Directory has ever been published, either in Hongkong or any other part of the East, at such a low price.-

It has an extensive circulation in all Forts above referred to as an excuse for his between Singapore and Nowchwang, in the Australasian Colonies, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and the scale of charges has been fixed at an exceptionally low rate: Terms can be learned on application.
