In the opinion of Sir T. Spencer Wells, Presider of a well known English sanitary association much of the outcry about dangers from wamen taking up men's work is breath wasted. He thinks women capable of a great deal more than they have been accustomed to do in times past. THE military authorities of Russia have lately issued an order that cavalrymen shall not wear their ordinary spurs when they attend a ball. At Hongkong balls spurs are almost universally wara by military dudes especially by those whose duties have nothing to do with horse-riding. But it's the fashion.

LONDON, September and.

THE work of canalizing the Seine, which has been in progress for fifteen years, is still being actively pushed forward. According to the engineer, M. Bouquet de la Grye, the cost will not exceed 135.000,000 francs. The object of the work is to deepen the river so that vessels of 2,000 to 2,500 tons, which at present have to stop at Rouen, may go to Paris. It is intended to reconstruct an arch of each. of the bridges across the Seine to allow of the passage of the vessels.

Mr. Mossop appeared for the prosecution and Mr. Caldwell defended. It was shewn that one of the two pri- soners waylaid the plaintiff, whom he coticed into his choice parlour in Queen's Road Central upon the pretext of satisfying his anxious uncle (the other prisoner) that his fiance had not yet gone over to the vast majority in the Antipodes. Once inside, these kindly friends invited their guest to yum cha and smoke the fragrant weed. The result was that in less than ten minutes the gardener was insensible, minus bis coin, and chucked out in the street When he came to his scnses he laid an information with the police, who took care of him until this morning. IN BANKRUPTCY.

His lordship, to Mr. Wyson-Have you any. thing to say?

Mr. Van Eps-I would like to say a few words-

His lordship-Your solicitor must say what you wish. Is Mr. Ha Wyson representing you? Mr. Van Eps (after considerable hesitation) Not on this occasion; he represents Mr. Minhinnett.

His lordship, to Mr. Wyson-Who instructed you? Who do you appear for ?

Mr. Ho Wyson (after consideration)—Mr. Minhinnet.

:

His lordship-Don't you also appear for Mr. Van Eps?

Mr. Ho Wyson-Yes! I believe so. His lordship. Well have you anything to say?

Mr. Ho Wyson-No, my lord.

The Chairman said that as the report set out the details so fully it left hardly anything to add, but he might mention that the profits of the business for the present half-year compared very favorably with the corresponding period. of last year, that was to say July and August. The manager, Mr. Tucker, hoped to shews greater percentage of gain on the working than had been the case heretofore. The claims and costs in connection with the case. Chater v. The Hotel Company, were before Mr. Ackroyd when Registrar, and resulted in a reduction of the claims by $2,499.58, and on the costs of $1,391.75, or, altogether, $3,81 33. The claims of two of the parties to the suit were entirely disallowed. He then invited questions, and, none being asked, proposed the adoption of the report and balance sheet.

Mr. Rutter seconded, and they were accepted. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by

Then he changed to entreaty; he implored, ho besought him to put the dreadful thing out. THE Democratic press of the United States is almost unanimous in declaring the position taken up by Lord Salisbury on the Behring Sea Question to be unassailable. The St. Louts Republican says to quote Mr. Blaine's claim regarding Bebring sea is absurd, and that Canada is entirely in the right. When similar claim was put forward by Russla, the United States argued exactly as Lord Salisbury is arguing now. The people, not Blaine, rule

opposed the adjudication upon several grounds, chief amongst which was the fact that Mr. Webber had never committed any real act of bankruptcy. He had left the colony for purely private reasons, and with no intention or purpose of delaying or defrauding his creditors. It was

of within the range possibility that Mr. Wobber might never again practice his profession in Hongkong, but nevertheless he might, and at no far distant date, roters to this colony. It would therefore be very hard on him, he never having committed any real act of bankruptcy, to return and and that he had been adjudicated a bank- rupt. He could not see that under sub-section 1. of section to of Ordinance 5 of 1364 Mr. Webber bad committed any act of bankruptcy.

His lordship, after satisfying himself as to the validity of Mr. Fraser-Smith's power of attorney, said he had held that Mr. Webber's departure from Hongkong constituted an act of bankruptcy under section 14 of the Ordinance, his goods having been sold under writ of execution. Mr. Rody could show that there was no act of bankruptcy-by the bankrupt himself appearing to show cause why he should not be adjudicated then that would be a good reason for setting aside the adjudication. This matter had been decided under section 14 of the Ordinance, and
