THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, AUGUST 30, 1 1890.

THE dinner tendered to the Hon. A. P. MacEwen by the members of the Hongkong Golf Club, will take place at the Hongkong. Hotel this evening at 8 o'clock.

THE alarming rumour got aboard yesterday that A case of cholera had occurred on board a steamer which arrived from the North during the forenoon. On investigation it transpired that the third engineer of the Canton had been left in Swatow, having been attacked with dysentery. INa paragraph in our issue of last night regarding aptain Pitman of Canton, by a slip of the pen that gentleman was described as "the hopeless debtor of the Canton Government for many thousands of dollars." Of course it ought to have read "the hopeless creditors" it is only too well-known how shamefully Captain Pitman's services were requited by China's leading statesman and patriot, Viceroy Chang Chib-tung. Six months imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence passed by Mr. Robinson at the Police Court to-day upon a burglar who entered Sergeant Mann's house in Hollywood Road at four o'clock this morning and stole therefrom a gold watch and chain and a silver prize cup, which the Sergeant had won in a shooting competition. The whole of the property was, we are glad to hear, recovered two hours after the theft, by a smart Chinese detective who" dropped on" the culprit in a pawn-shop.

We hear that Mr. H. Leffler, late of the Scottish Oriental Company's steamer Phra Chula Chem Kiao, has been appointed chief officer of the Chinese steamer Smith, Capt. Mackintosh, now running between Hongkong and Formosa, via Amoy."

COMPLAINTS have reached us about night having been made hideous up in Cloudland until a very early hour this morning. Circum stances aller cases. This was a very special occasion, and taking everything into considera tion, we feel justified in overlooking the alleged spree." But in fature. It would be just as well before starting on a pilgrimage of this sort to be sure that there are no sick people in the neigh bourhood. A wink is as good as a nad, etc.

THE Ecandalous wharf arrangements to the west of the Central Market, whence the Chinese Yaumati launches start, have long been a dis- grace to the colony. This morning. as a crowd of passengers were making a rush to safety of the get on board one of those filthy rattle-traps locally dubbed passenger launches, two of thems were precipitated into the water, and all but drowned.

On receipt of the telegram announcing. this unexpected misfortune, Mr. William Warren, a mining engineer of great experience, was consulted, and the following extract from his letter will acquaint you with his opinion as to the mishap and, also, the proximity of the level to the lode:-"Herewith I have the honour to submit que plan and two sections which I have prepared of the Company's mines from data furnished by the Secretary. From these it will be evident to anyone that, judging from the appearance of the new shaft and cross-cut, the prospects of the Company seem highly favourable, if the figures submitted by the local manager are to be relied upon, and no accidents should happen to prevent or delay the rapid progress which has recently been made. The probable lode seems to be within measur- able distance for crass cutting, some 14 feet only apparently remaining to reach the foot wall of the lode. With regard to the sudden accession through and filled the shaft, and thus suspended of water, which is reported to have broken operations, this is of course a misfortune, but is difficulties to overcome greater than are the probably by no means a serious matter, or the usual experiences in similar Cornish and other mines. A powerful pump will perhaps be one with a plunger of say 9 to to inches necessary, but probably not specially large diameter by 3 to 4 feet stroke would in all likell hood rapidly reduce the water to a normal flow," Your Directors are very much indebted to Mr. Warren for the above expression of opinion and for the very complete detail plans of the Company's mines which are on the table, and which will no doubt be examined by you with much interest. We are now awaiting further particulars as to what is required at the mine and on receipt of the information, steps will be immediately taken to send whatever Dock Company will be able in the short space may be needed, and in all probability our Ircal of a month to supply our wants. The telegram received on the path inst, to the effect that rock had been met all over the west level was con sidered a satisfactory Indication that favorable ground was com upon, and this view is con- firmed by the manager in
