ACCORDING to the Peking Gazette H. M. the Emperor commanded the Board of Astronomy to appoint an auspicious day for the annual washing of the Imperial elephants. The 17th of this month, at the first hour, was the day appointed, and the officers of the Board of Ceremonies put up temporary mat sheds, beautifully decorated, on the north side of the treek, outside the Hsuan Wu Môn, where the Iniperial elephants received an ovation. The shipwrecked crew of the steamer Egypt were landed at Dover last night. It transpires that the, Captain was the only one of those on board who was burnt. The vessel was carrying a cargo of cattle for Liverpool, and these were roasted alive. The scenes on board during the burning of the vessel are described as terrible. The fire broke out on the 17th instant.

Chan Chun Shang, a well-dressed Chinaman, was indicted for unlawfully wounding Leung Tim, on the 1st July, Mr. Francis, QC (instructed by Mr. Hastings) prosecuted, and Mr. Leach (instructed by. Mr. Ewens) defended. The jurors were-Messrs. T. B. Powell, C. Reeves, C. F. Naudia, W. G. Humphreys, J, Wallace, J. Ullmann, and J. M. d'Almeida.
Mr. Francis said that the prosecutor was the principal owner of several eating houses, in which the prisoner also had a share. Sometime before the 37th July disagreements arose, and the partnership was dissolved. During the proceed. ings the prisoner uttered threats. On the 27th July, when going along the street, a, sumber of men got hold of prosecutor and assaulted him, the prisoner being prominent in the attack
