The Marquis of Salisbury speaking at the Mansion bouse on Wednesday said that the situation everywhere was pacific: that the African agreement had removed all cause of quarrel; that the time had not arrived for th withdrawal of the British forces from Egypt and that this would depend greatly on other nations who were able to advance or retard the depar- ture of the troops.

MR ROBINSON's decision in the charge brought against the British barque G. H. Wappius is grossly unjust, whichever way it may be taken. if Capt. Haasen were innocent of the charges made against him, be ought to have been acquitted; if guilty, the full penalty the law allows should have been imposed. A line of $50 for an offence of this character is playing with justice.

THE man who writes to the Daily Press of this morning re the case of the Queen v. Leslie is, on his own showing, a galoot of the first water. He can't help it, of course; he was born that way, and there way be some doubt whether the editor of the Press who passed such childish rubbish was responsible for his own actions. After the first hearing at the Police Court, Leslie was bound to be committed for trial before a jury at the Criminal Sessions, and all other proceedings were mere waste of time.

THE Daily Press is soury to think that the China Mail's religious article on the police court case, in which a school teacher tried to rain a police officer by a series of infamous falsehoods, was "inspired." We don't know anything about the inspiration, but we have no hesitation in saying that, if the Judge had done his duty, the prosecutor would have been promptly provided with three month's board and lodging at her Majestys- the tax-payers of Hongkong's)

THE Colonial Courts of Admiralty Bill, which passed through the House of Lords early session, and has been delayed in its passage through the Commons owing to the pressure of business, is more interesting from a constitutional than from a legal point of view, says the Law Journal. A B-TAVIA paper says that the victorious troops returning from Edi have been enthusiastically received at Samarang, the garrison place. This episode in the long-drawn out Acheen war may rank high in importance from the change in tactics characterising it. For the first time since the war began 17 years ago, artillery came pro- minently into play against the Achinese forts, and mainly contributed to the easy victory won by the troops. Formerly, storming ferts came too much into fashion, with consequently heavy loss to the attacking force. The use of artillery enabled the Achinese to be driven out of almost Impregnable fortifications in Edi with slight loss to the troops. In Acheen Fraper, the army has been armed with magazine rifles, and improved
cannon have been substituted for guns on old meleis. A military balloon service, and tele- graph communication between Acheen and Batavia all show that the war has entered upon a new phase with prospects of greater vigour, Another man-of-war, the Flores, has been ordered to Acheen to reinforce the blockading squadron. The latter now takes in almost all Archipelago. At other stations only three men- of-war do duty.

All went well for a time, but at length the leaders of the people, the bigoted and blinded literary men, stirred up the town by posting placards, naming the day for turning out the foreigners. They claimed that the medicine given by the missionary to the sick effected only a temporary reliel and ended finally in great calamity to the persons treated. They affirmed also that the talssionary bad two very li hai pusos, fe, two very damaging-idols, to wit a true Chinese idol given by one of the native converts as a memento and as a sign of hlo renunciation of their worship, and the other, which was the fiercest and most ugly they had ever seen.
