CHINKIANG..

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) .. 7th August, 1890, The press of China, native and foreign, daily

given accounts of the dreadful floods now prevailing in parts of China. Kiangnan is is suffering from drought. Throughout this section of the country hundreds of acres of grow ing rice, as soon as the pond supplies of water are exhausted, will be parched, unless a timely rainfall aclieve the distress. A few more days of dry weather will entail a vast amount of suffering during the coming winter. The Magistrate of Chin kiang has forbidden the slaughter of animals, in the hopes of obtaining rain, but so far with little success. The writer has often suggested to the Chinese the probability of a more desirable issue to their petitions If, instead of forbidding the butcher, they would prohibirthe keepers of opium hells; the increase in number of these death traps in the past few years, has been ap- palling! It seems that the poorer the people become by successive droughts the more opium they require to satisfy the abnormal craving.

At the South gate the Chinese bave been in a state of trepidation for several days. A beast 'called by natives A'ru-f'ex-hu has for two years cadeavoured to devour children. Last year a boy was dragged away from home and severely bilten, but was saved by the Chinese lighting Gres and thus frightening the beast. away. was requested to On Sunday the writer go and see a child to years old who had been seriously injured by the tiger. He had been attacked, in daylight whilst cut- ting grass. Early on Monday morning, in com- pany with Dr. Edgar Woods, I started for the place. Upon arriving we found the patient lying had on a bed, terribly lacerated. The tiger crunched his head and bitten him viciously in several parts of the body. Now is the chance for some enterprising sportsman to distinguish himself. The people say the brid of dogs and colour, bas a large tail, is not afraid of

THE WEEK'S SHARE BUSINESS.

Hongkong, 9th August, 1890. The Share Market has been again very quiet during the week, and although the majority of local stocks have been inquired after, very few important sales, excepting in Banks and 'China Sugars, have been reported. A decided improvement, how- ever, has to be noted generally, and improved rates have ruled since we last wrote,

Banks were quiet early in the week, but since the publication of the half-yearly report a strong demand has set in for shares, and sales have been arranged at from 208 to 211 per cent. premium for cash, and from 209 to 213 for the 25th inst., the stock closing firm, with buyers at 212 for cash. Sales of New Issue shares have been effected at 165 for cash, and there are additional buyers.

In Marine Insurances, China Traders and Unions continue in request at 71 and 10: respectively, whilst Cantons are out of favour at 115. The weakness of the last named stock is attributed to the presence. In our midst of an operator from the North, who is credited with having selling orders to a considerable extent, and therefore an even lower quotation is more than likely.

China Sugars have been rather scarce during the last few days. Ofters of 170 for the 25th inst: and 175 for December have been refused; but a fair amount of cash business has been reported at from -168 to 170. The stock is now very firm. Luzons have continued a popular medium of investment at increasing rates; cash sales to a considerable extent have been booked at from 106 to 108, and at from 108 to 10 for September, and there are further buyers on these conditions at 107 and 109 respectively.

A small business in the scrip of the Wharf and Godown Co. has been arranged at 81 and 2 for cash, and shares are still wanted at the former figure.

Land Investments have been almost entirely neglected, the only transactions reported being a private transfer of 500 shares at 89 for cash and a similar number at the same rate for delivery on the 25th inst.

Mining Stocks: Punjoms are decidedly out of favor at present, with shares freely offering at $7 for cash. Nothing has been done In Raubs, and this stock is also weak at $2. A steady and strong demand for
