In his speech at the Imperial Federation League yesterday the Earl of Rosebery said that it would be impolitic to convene a federation conference in London whilst the subject of federation was under discussion in the Australian colanies. It appears that the bow of the vessel was stove in when she struck, the coral reef. The passengers were landed on the zeef waist deep in water. One passenger died from the effects of the exposure.

The vessel struck the reef at 6 o'clock in the morning, the weather at the time being fine and clear. She was kept afloat for four hours after striking, and in the meantime admirable order was maintained on board, everything resembling A panic being prevented. There were only 12 saloon passengers in the steamer, and these, with ray emigrants, most of whom were girls, were landed on the reef.
