The Courrier d'Haiphong of the 12th inst contains the following stringe story --Last year the Government granted a very large agricultural concession-nearly 100,000, adres to M. Victor Roque, gunsmith, Haiphong. The concession was situated at the entrance to the valley of Luc-nam, between Dong-tricu (where General Schaedelin's concession is) and Nam-man, six miles from the military post at the former place. M. Roque sent 150 or 200 Chinese $500,000.00 families there, and two villages were established, 71 one of Buddhists and the other of Christians. Some 424871.69 time age, on account of trouble, the Resident withdrew the permit to the villages to have sixty $525,31840 vifies for their defence. Two months ago M. Laborde went to the place to live, as the repre- sentative of M, Roque, and on Monday last (the 19447.94 7th) M. Roque, with his brother Henri, Father 500,000.00 Arellano, à Spanish priest), M. They stayed in the mayor's house in n'village near the concession, and on Tuesday night, about 11.30, the place was invaded, shots and shouts being heard. M. in the back. Costa was at once bound and carried away, but Henri Roque and Laborde delended themselves toutly, and received several blows from clubs before retreating to where Victor Roque and Padre, Arellano were. The attacking party set fire to the house, and after a quarter of an hour, as the thatch was blazing, they all made a sortie, rather than burn to death. The Padre succeeded in getting through, and spent the right hidden in the bushes, with only his pyjamas on Laborde was surrounded, but managed to escape and reach the soldiers at Dongiricu. but the police had no idea that he had suicidal Intentions, and if he had, they thought he had VICTORIA not the means at hand 'to carry them into execution. When brought to the station on Satur day night, his watch, papers and a pocket knife were taken from him in the usual way. He had

been drinking heavily for some time before, and was under the influence of liquor when brought into the station. Yesterday he was visited by averal friends, along with his wife, and arrange- ments were being made for securing bail on his behalf, and elso for procuring the services of a lawyer-but nothing on either point, was definitely settled, although the charge against him is a serious one. At about half-past seven o'clock this morning, he took a cup of coffee, but would eat nothing, and at eight o'clock one of the police officers saw him lying in his cell on the wooden platform, which serves as a bed for priso: ers, with his red regula- tion blanket wrapped closely round him. He then appeared all right, Shortly before nine a messenger brought him a note from his wife, and the sergeant on duty took it into bis cell. Something then appeared wrong with the accused, who said he could not read the message, where: upon the sergeant appsised Inspector Kluth of the circumstance. The Inspector ran hastily into the cell and asked Mr. Stiles what was the matter. He replied "I am very sick Send for the doctor."
