where I broke the silence by saying "Now Dick, tell me truly what is the matter.
"I want to, Rip, but it's hard," she replied, and I could see in the dim light that her eyes were moistening. "I've found it out at last, Rip" she continued," but I didn't think I was so weak before. Rip, forgive me, for the first time have felt my weakness" and she put her head upon my shoulder and sobbed.
Poor Dick, how I pitied her. Shortly after that I was left on deck, thinking whether the pleasure of squeezing a girl's hand was noi sometimes paid for at too dear'a price.
'Two weeks later Dick was married to a Ɛman in Hongkong, to whom for some time past she had been engaged. Let us hope that the little cloud which darkened her happiness on the Gallia will make the sunset of her life the brighter..

This year's harvest at Newchwang is very good. In former years it usually began to snow in the gth moon, and the part was generally clared in the 10th moon, but this year it closed unusually late. On the roth of the 11th moon the jonk and sailing boats from Shanghai, Ningpo, Amoy and Swatow loaded their cargo of bean oil and sailed for their respective destina-
tions, after which the prices dropped in oil.
Some Canton and Swatow men, seeing the prices so favourable in bean oil, at once purchased a lat and shipped them by steamers and on account of this there were 50 more steamers dispatched from Newchwang.
At Ichang in the Tung Ho district on the 2d of last moon a leopard was seen in tobacconist's shop in the upper storey people made an attempt to catch the animal-where- upon it got scared, and it jumped down on to a roof and then made off, carrying a child in its mouth A brave old man took a club and pursued the beast to a creek, and dealt it a heavy blow. Thereupon the leopard dropped the boy, and turned upon its assailant. But assistance soon coming, the old man, with the help of others, killed "the_animal, When the maiter was reported to the magistrate, of the district, he suitably rewarded the plucky old man, who displayet such courage in attacking this formidable and savage animal.

On account of these two failures many people got a sévre and went with their chques, bills and drafts to their various banks to cash them, and in consequence of this rush several small banks failed, being unable to meet the sudden demand. On this account money is very scarce at Nanking, and this is being felt also in Shanghai. The manager, and others who held responsible positions at the silk store have absconded, leaving only an old man of about 80, who had to appear at the yamén in answer to the summons issued by the creditors.
CHEFOO.
THE RECENT STORM.
A corespondent, writing to the Shanghai Mercury on the 25th ulto, from Chefoo, says - Yesterday and last night we had a fearful storm; we have had nothing like it since the loss of the Ellen Castle. The whole sea line is strewn with the wreckage of sampana, junks, and boats. The sea carried away the gates of the Sea View Hotel, besides breaking away a large piece of the wall, with all the outside bunding at the corner. The Club wall is completely gone, and there are only a few of the timbers standing, just enough to show where the wall stood. All the earth at the back is quite washed down, showing only the roots of some of the trees that were growing there. The front of the boathouse has been smashed in, and the boats were dashed about inside the house
