NICE, November 6th.

Jules Ferry is seriously ill.

WASHINGTON, November 6th. When Secretary Tracy returned to his desk in the Navy Department to-day he found a tele gram from the Union Iron Works Company of San Francisco, builders of the Charleston, in response to his telegram of Saturday last, In this message the Iron Works Company says that they believe they could show 7400 horse- power with reduced propeller on another trial of the vessel, but in order to avoid delay and trouble they will withdraw their demand for a new trial, and leave the matter entirely in the hands of the Secretary. Upon this Secretary Tracy ordered the acceptance of the Charleston the question of penalty to be considered as the final settlement with the contractors,

ZANZIBAR, November 6th. Information has reached here of the massacre of Dr. Peters, the organizer of the German-African Colonization Society and the leading spirit of the Vitu Company, and that the entire party was massacred near Karkorri on the Tana river. One European, supposed to be Captain Rust, and one Somali escaped.

The party is supposed to have been killed by Somalis or Gallas, though the Masai are also credited with the butchery. It is unlikely that the Basal bad a band in the massacre, as their country is farther west. Karkorri is to miles from the coast, following the course of the Tann river. The latter form the eastein boundary of the British East African Company.

Peters in following the course of the Tabs established Gemman stations on the east bank, to the great disgust of the English, who finally headed him off and followed his example. Though his ostensible object was to reliere Emin Pasha, he lost no opportunity of advancing German interest, and thus gained the enmity of the British East African Company, and their

allics.

Karkorri is in a part of the country beyond British influence and inhabited by Gallas and Somalis, both warlike tribes. There are no details of the massacre. but no doubt is enter. tained of the death of Peters and the extinction of his expedition,

LONDON, November 6th..

It has just come to light that since Bradlaugh was taken sick his house his been flooded with documents, in all of which he was informed how he could be saved from damnation, if he would join each one of a dozen church denominations. Every tract society in Great Britain has taken a hand in deluging the atheistic member of -Parliament with religious literature.

Sir Henry Jones continued his speech for the Times before the Parnell Commission to-day. He quoted from speeches made by Michaei Davitt in 1880 to show that the object of the league was under the cloak of the Constita- tionalists to effect a combination between the forces of the moderates and extremists belonging to the American Clan-na-Gael and the Irish Constitutionalists in the work of keeping Ireland unsettled. Sir Henry referred to speeches. by various Parnellites to prove that the agitators were ready to resort to criminal means to effect their purpose.

William O'Brien has applied for a new trial against Lord 'allsbury.

Malloy, member of Parliament, in a speech at Sheffield this evening, said that the Farnellites had in their possession documentary evidence proving the complicity of Government officials in a conspiracy against the Irish, and the publica tion of the evidence would cause a sensation greater than the Commission revelations. He said it was intended to expose the plot imme diately after the opening of Parliament

BERLIN, November 7th. While the Felers expedition' was ascending the Tana river Lieutenant Tidemann, in a quarrel, was compelled to shoot four Masais. It is probable, therefore, that yengeance was the motive for the massacre of the party.

Among the items in the new naval estimates before the Reichstag that have aroused the bitterest hostilky, of the opposition is that for 450 coo marks for a new yacht for the Kaiser and Kaiserin. It is announced that the Hoken; zollern is too small, though she is a steamer of 1700 tons, and the Kaiser wants a larger yacht. In reference to this question, a gentleman thoroughly qualified to speak said to the Herald comespondent: "The Emperor is passionately fond of travel. As a young man he had no opportunity to see the world at all Now he is free to do as he ple»ses, and is anxious to learn as much as possible by personal observation of the outside world.

"He is a great admiter of nature and a great lover of art, and what he is especially anxious to do is to see in every country he visits the leading men and to judge for himself in what essential matters life in other countries differs from life in Germany,

The great size of the new yacht planned for the Kaiser," continued this gentleman, “shows that much longer voyages will be undertaken in her than the old Hohenzollern was equal to. It is not likely that cruising in European waters will satisfy the Kaiser's thirst for information. Asia and Africa will be visited, and it is not unlikely that the Kaiser may cross the Atlantic and see with bis own keen, young eyes the United States, or new Germany beyond the 'seas,' as Germans like to call it, and of which

he has heard and read so much,"

a great many injured.

It is reported that the German flag has been holsted at Port Durdford. Captain Wismann, with a large force, will attack Sandani to-night.

· LONDON, November 7th..

The report of the death of the wife of Prince Alexander of Battenberg is declared to be untrue. Sir Henry James resumed his speech before the Farnell commission to-day in behalf of the Timer. He read extracts from speeches made by, Parnell, Davitt and others, in which the speakers advocated boycotting. He contended that the persons who had made these speeches were responsible for the crimes in Ireland follow- ing their delivery already and contem

ATHENS, November 8th.

The Government organ asserts that at a re- cent dinner at the British Legation Count Her- bert Bismarck told Premier Tricoupit that Germany unreservedly cognized Turkey's sovereignty in Crete, and it behoved Greece to accommodate her polley the peaceful efforts of the Great Powers.

Tricoupis, it is said, frankly replied that Greece recognized Turkey's rights in Crete in just the same measure as the Powers recognised Turkey's rights in Egypt, Cyprus, Roumella and Bosnia, and, therefore, would not limit the free- dom of her policy by binding promises.

SKIDDERKEN ([icland). November 8th. Intelligence reached here from Crook-haven this evening of the tatal loss of the steamer Quemora, Captain Frenery, which was bound from Baltimore, M., to Liverpool with a general cargo. All went well on the voyage until Mon- to work at the pumps, and all day and night day, when the cargo caught fire. The crew set

worked hard in trying to subdue the flames, but to purpose, and to make matters worse a thick fog set on in the afternoon,

and the captain lost his reckoning. While the dense fog prevailed the unfortunate vessel struck on rocks beneath Three Castle head near Crook- haven.

By this time the fire had reached, the cabin, which was literally a mass of flames, yet the gallant captain aud his intrepid crew. kept at work at the pumps until the doomed vessel was about to sink, when they lowered the small boats and had barely time to make their escape when the steamer went down.

In the rush for their lives the men were unable to save any clothing. They landed at Crook- haven this evening with only what they wore. The Quiensmore had a crew of seventy-five bands and there were 895 head of cattle on board. She was built only this year at Belfast by Messra. Harland & Wolf. She was a fine screw steel steamer of 4385 tons, and was awned by W. H. Johnston & Co. of Liverpool.
