"better-half, their conversation was overheard bi a man, who wanted something' to do, so he st once went and dressed bimself in woman's attire, and presented himself, as an applicant for a maid-servant's situation. As he was of a rather pleasing countenance he managed to palm himself off as a giri and he was engaged in their service. He pleased his masier and mistress very much, being very diligent. One day the mistress had to go to chin-chin jois" | and ordered the servant to follow the chair (sedan) to the Temple. On the way there the noticed that the supposed girl's gait of walking was rather masculine; the made a searching enquiry afterwards and discovered the fraud which had been practiced apan them and the "maid "was at once sent to the authorities to be punished.

Outside of Tung-Wa gate, Peking, in the Nei-wu-fu district, there lived a Magistrate named Kung, with his family. On the 13th instant, in the night-time they were attacked by a band of fify robbers, armed with revolvers, who forcibly opened the windows and entered the house. The first thing they did was to fire off a few shots in order to frighten the inmates, then they bound Kang up and threatened to kill him, if he refused to teflwhere all bis trensure was kept, and failed to deliver up th keys of all the trunks. Their threat had the desired effect, so the robbers ransacked the place from top to bottom, and they took away the money, jewellery, and other valu ables to the extent of Tls. 10,000. The thieves carried off their plunder in three carts. While they were passing a guard-house, elight soldiers came out, and tried to catch some of them; but the robbers scon mede the soldiers understand that it was useless for them to attempt any arrest, so the latter withdrew from any further pursuit. It was snowing at the time, and if the soldiers wanted to catch them, it was an easy matter, as they could easily have got a reinforcement and followed the foot-prints.] If such daring outrages are permitted to occur In this way, wealthy persons will become an easy prey f.r these rascals. Up to the present time none of the offenders have been caught.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26,

to Peking, where she gives them a period of two years for the study of the language. This plan has also its advantages, especially for the spoken language... Which turns out the best men in the long run it would be difficult to say,

The third and concluding volumes of M. Huart, French Consul in Canton, on the Chinese spoken language, has just been issued from the Peitang press, and certainly does much credit to both author and press. This volume is taken up with conversations, and their translation with valuable notes. The subjects of conversation embrace. the ordinary topics such as one would meet with and must know, in coming into intercourse with this people, such as invitations to dinner, new year's day visits, deliberations without success, at the Tsungli Yaniên (an occurrence to all appearance which takes place, very frequently); a visit to the Peking Paternoster Row with the view of buying books, offering presents and felicitations on the occasions of a marriage, and birthday ; viewing the trousseau; con- sultation with a physician and the visit of the doctor to a patient; on going to see a funeral; on obtaining preferment in office, thanking the Emperor, visiting an official who is proceeding to his post and receiving one returning to the capitai from bis post; dinner at a restaurant ; visit to the theatre'; the menu of Chinese repast, and numerous other interesting subjects too many

to chronicle. These conversations are followed by chapters dealing with the usages and customs of Peking during the four seasons, and these again by appendices on the reigning dynasty, with a list of the Emperors of the Chinese Empire, also of the mandarloate both civil and military. 1 have now before me the four goodly volumea, forming a valuable work for French beginners of the Chinese language. The first treats of an introduction to the study of the language, the general principles of the spoken language, and six appendices relating to the above two portions. The second volume is taken up with easy phrases and miscellaneous dialogues. The third is the one now issued, containing conversations, with translation and notes, and the fourth is the Chinese text, of all. This work must prove useful not only in China and Tongking, bat in the Oriental schools of Paris and Europe gene- rally.-N.-C. Daily News.

Our unprecedented fall of snow during the first & WALSH, LIMITED. week of November left our streets in a puddle. Hard frost set in and froze the ruts, making locomotion" difficult and uncomfortable. The lanes will remain most probably in this condition during the entire winter. At night the thermo- meter has fallen an low as 12° below freezing, At this season last year the weather - wäs extremely mild.

I had lately to chronicle the arrival of two

students, Messrs. Lallemand and Courant, with an attaché M.
