AMOY.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
AMOY, November 8th, The Amoy Amateur Dramatic Club has been resuscitated from the ashes of a dead past, and has started life under what are considered favorable auspices; but I suppose, like every- thing else in Amoy, it will gradually die off after the first "spurt."
Training for our annual races has commenced in earnest. The griffins imported are thought to be a good lot, all round, and two or three very likely ponies are included in the mob. I notice some new "jocks" hard at work on the sands, trying their hands-or would it be more accurate to say their headi-lo the morning gallops, We are all anxious to have "An Old Sportsman" up in Amoy to assist in making things a bit lively at race time, and it was rumoured some time ago that he intended sending up some of his famous racers; but I suppose we can scarcely rely on such support!
The Amoy cricketers can now hide their diminished heads, after the awful "towelling" they
received the other day at the hands of the Hongkong team. There was a sort of bellef here that we could turn out a fairly strong clever, but that has been exploded, and we shall have
to fall back on lawn tennis.
I suppose you bave already beard that the Indo-China Co's steamer Fooksang arrived on the 2nd inst.. bringing a junk's crew of sixteen men, whom she rescued from a dismasted junk the previous day to the north of Namoa Island. Such a deed as this certainly calls for some recognition from the Chinese authorities.
The steamship Cass put back this morning short of coal.

It is reported that in the rice fields close to the river only about three-fourths of the usual quantity of second crop have been collected, and Oh other fields where no water could be obtained, only one fourth. Many other have turned out a complete failure. The price of rice compared with that of a few months ago, shows a rise of fully seventy cents a picul.
We have been informed that a repetition of the late trouble between Kwangsi and Foochow begin the country will probably take place, fighting of a rather serious nature for the same cause is going on further up from the place of the late trouble. Unless the authorities set

No good umpire should travel out of bis pro- vince to give extra-judicial dicta. We have al heard of the empire who, when the bowler asked "How's that?" responded admiringly Beauti ful !" This was at least complimentary, if not satisfactory, but some of these extra-judicial umpires' dicta are neither the one nor the other Mr. Swas many years ago captaining a scratch eleven against an eleven of potters in South Devon. It was an excellent match. Thr last potter was in, they had two runs to make to tie. The batsman played a bail to cover-paint

CRICKETERS CLASSIFIED.
Cricketers may be classed in order of ability much on the lines of the historic classification of the egg. For as the egg is commonly sus tible of fourfold discrimination in respect of the relative freshness of particular specimens-a1_1, "The new laid egg" (which we hope to get for breakfast), 2, "The fresh egg" (which may be used without offence in a pudding), 3. "The breakfast egg"(whose white is comparatively innocuous for glazing pastry) and 4th and lastly, "The egg "-simple, but not always pure-(a useful missile of political warfare); so, too, of cricketers we may likewise say that we have t "The first class cricketer, 2. "The good cricketer," 3. "The keen cricketer," and 4, "The cricketer," which last includes those who play at but do not play cricket-a vast difference-ef hoc genus omne, -
DOWLERS.
A bowler Jays himself dangerously open to the retort courteous when he takes upon himself to reason with his field on their lack of activity in fielding hits off his own bowling. On one occa sion when Mr. Freturned from a somewhat leisurely pursuit of a hit off Mr. B——'s bowling, the latter said to him "Why did you not run after it faster F to which Mr. Freplied, with painted brevity, "Afraid I shouldn't last the distance."

SOME CRICKETING STORIES..·
"I feel myself peculiarly qualified," says Mr. Horace G. Hutchinson, in his little brochure with the above title (Longmans), for addressing the cricketing public, because, being myself a duffer,' I am able to enter into the delights and difficulties of the game from the point of view of the great majority, and, knowing that my opinion will be universally disregarded, as worth nothing, have no hesitation in giving it with perfect free- dom, and without the slightest sense of respon sibility." Here are a few samples of Mr. Hutchinson's "Saws and Stories"! *-—-—.
