TYPHOON AT YOKOHAMA,,
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.
On the night of the 12th inst., (saysthe Japan Gastle) a terrific storm passed over Yokohama and its environs, causing much damage and destruction to property in the neighbourhood. A quickly falling barometer gave forewarning of a storm of more than ordinary severity and by. five or six o'clock algusty wind and heavy rain made passage along the streets not only unplea- sant but positively dangerous. The barometer continued to fall and every minute the wind became more gusty and more boisterous than before. Throughout the night it blew with Tiles and chimneys, trees and broken fences were blown about in all almost typhoon force. directions, and we have heard of several instances

Along the Bund the storm was felt with the greatest severity and it is here that the greatest damage has been done. From Deakins' to the boat-house the road this morning presented a peculiar sight. The gravel for several inches in depth immediately behind the reclaiming wall was washed into the centre of the toad and the stoops were completely bared, while lower down the Bund in the direction of the English Haloba the stoops with few exceptions lie across the ground, and debris of various kinds is (or was) scattered about in all directions. The signal post at the English Haloba was split in twain and to-day is neither of use nor ornament. The new Imperial Customs shed, with galvanised sheet iron roof, and another shed at the Nipponi Hatoba are completely destroyed. When the gale commenced two lighters were loading tea. and silk on the steamer Abyssinia in the harbour, and seeing that the weather was going to be of the Pacific Mail S.S. Co., went off in the Co's extremely rough Capt. Martin and Capt. Gotham, tug, took the lighters in tow and proceeded to bring them to the Hateba. Before teaching here, however, the lighter containing the ten sprang a serious leak and became waterlogged Through the energy of Captains Martin and Gorham the
lighter containing the silk was safely brought

Augt 31st 23. Considering the difficulties appertaining to the procuring of Chinese labour in a new country this progress must be considered highly satis. factory. Coolies are flocking to Jelebu now from Selangor and Sunghel Ujong and have been doing so for the last two months, which is in itself a proof that Tin Mining there offers a better chance of success than in the neighbouring states. Your Directors will however not be tempted by this favourable state of the labour market to extend the Company's workings too rapidly, and the Manager in instructed to pick out only the very best men and headmen of the crowd and not to go ahead faster than is compatible with safety,
The mines now.working are, with the exception of two, all doing very well, and it is expected that after their second washing and delivery of ore (in about 3 months) most of the mines will have wiped off their advances and have a balance on the right side.
Washing in going on now and the Manager estimates the ore washed and in process of wash ing at the mines to be 550 plcals, which will be delivered during September October,
'It must be mentioned that when a new mine. is open, it takes fully two months to clear the jungle, build and furnish a Kongste house, make a road, dig a well, &c. and another month to get at the karang: consequently no deliveries can be expected until three months after commencing operations. After work is once started, deliveries abould come in regularly every two months or so, excepting for want of rain. Most of the old mines which have been working over three months, have already delivered satisfactory quantities of one
The total advances outstanding on 31st August amounted to $12,758.78:- With reference to this Item your Directors would point out that each of the mines forms a distinctly separate and in itself responsible.concern and the said amount Is the total of all advances owing by the 23 different Mines or Kongsees, not a single one being indebted for more than $1,000. The advantage of this system of separation against the modus of working of other Companies... where enormous “: SUMA
are advanced to one or a few, Towkays, is obvious, The working of every separate mins can be easily controlled and, if unsatisfactory, advances can be stopped before the loss to the Company becomes serious and without in the least interfering with the working of the other mines. Two of the older mines have so been stopped and a loss of |$750 at the outside" is" anticipated on that account; the balance of the advances may be considered as perfectly safe. Your Directors and the Manager are paying the greatest alten. tion to the item of advances and, since it is not possible to do away altogether with advancing, they shall take all possible precautions to guard against loss under this heading,
* The profits of the Company are derived from in royalty of 10 per cent, on all tin that are pro
duced by the mines and from a return of 20 per cent, on the price of all provisions with which the coolles are supplied, and the profit so made is shown on Profit and Loss aft-The Company has contracted for the supply of provisións, &c, on the above terms with a shop-keeper at Jélebu, who has so far given satisfaction.
The Company's staff at Jelebu consists of the Manager, Assistant Manager, and five natives. Considering the widespread nature of the under- taking the stiff da· small- and will' have to be Increased proportionate with the extension of work. Your Directors bave much pleasure in expressing their great satisfaction with the working of the staff and especially with the Manager, Mr. Dunman, who since he has taken charge of the Company's property has performed his hard and arduous task with a seal and ability which cannot be too highly commented upon
