which has never been opened, and also on the second plea that their having been absent for, say, the plaintiff, has prevented them from being absent on behalf of the defendant.
A law enabling barristers to recover their fees "at law would effect a revolution in the profession. For then barristers could only recover for work done, and a man who hadn't done the work couldn't recover at all.. Therefore, it would be vatn for a senior to accept a brief which he could not attend to, and the work generally would be much more evenly distributed. The prevailing theory that the fee marked is a gift, not a wage, works to the advantage of the leaders of the Bar and to the loss of all the rest of the profession. For a QC. can demand and receive the golden guinea, marked before he absents himself from the trial, while the junior has to "chalk it up," and it may be months before, all excuses ceasing," the attorney condescends to pay up. And some attorneys make it an invariable rule never to pay a copper to any member of the job. They cannot be forced to do so, and, therefore, they emphatically don't-unless in contentious cases when their client wins and the "Protho," on taxation refuses to allow the fee marked unless the barrister has given a receipt for the amount But on matters not involved in taxation the. junior may have to wait months, years, and for ever for his dollars, though his landlord may become irrliable and bis tailor insolvent during what M'Rac, M.P., would describe as "the inter-regnum." It is a gigantic error to suppose that barristers always get prompt cash; often they have to watt fonger than the Bega-Eden people have waited for the railway-longer even than the community has waited for the fulfilment of the Parkesian promises of Foreign-trade prom perity. But the leaders whom solicitors cannot Afford to affend get their fees quicker than the ingenious and energetic Mr. Murphy got Holt- "Sutherland roads in the good old Casual Labour

The following cpinion upon the usefulness of a Floating Hotel as a Health resort bs been given by James Cantile, Esq., M.B, M.R.C.S.E.
12th July, 1889
I have much swisfaction in expressing my To many a one in health the Hotel will pinion concerning the proposed Floating Hotel doubtless prove a luxury, but to many in illacss- "it will confer a blessing.
During the summer months especially many Gases of prostration from heat occur owing to the position of the city of Victoria, and even many ships in the Harbour are likewise deprived of the south-west monsoon.
A judicious position for the Hotel will bring those on board within the area of the cool night breezes, which are denied to those living on the lower levels of Hongkong.
Many patient to bear the journey to the sufficient to restore them to health, if cool breezes can do so.

HIS Company is formed for the purpose of building and conducting a Floating Hotel to be moored in the Harbour of Hongkong, Pontoons will be constructed to carry a rigid Platform, upon which will be built the super- structure to be occupied as a Hotel. The Pontoons are designed to be built in water-tight compart ments, so as to afford absolute security, in any event. The greatest care is being exercised in designing the whole structure, so as to give it rigidity and buoyancy.
The superstructure will be built of wood and iron in one storey, and will contain about 20 capacious Bed Rooms, a Dining Room, Reading, Smoking and Card Rooms, and Visitors' Parlors, with all the necessary Offices and accommoda- tien for properly entertaining guests
An important feature will be the provision of an open Air Swimming Bath, properly protected, and arranged to give Bathers any depth of water, desired special accommodation being provided for ladies and children, The sea water will enter at the ordinary rate of the current, and ifford a most safe and enjoyable means of recreation. This Bath it is proposed to let to artics at stated intervals, and with the provision of an inclusive charge for Launch and Bath, it is confidently believed that this must prove not only source of profit, but a great convenience to the community.
The Roof will be laid flat with damp and sound proof materials, and with proper awnings will afford a most enjoyable Promenade and Lounge, either by day or night.
The whole structure is "designed to be sea- worthy, and capable of being moved to say desired locality and anchored in the ordinary
